Gas burner won't stay alight

We have a three ring gas hob. The kids spilt a large amount of milk which saturated one of the burners. It has dried out, but when I depress the knob and try to light it, the burner only ignites about two thirds of the way round, and when I release the knob it goes out.

I will be having a habitation service but I can't get it done until the end of April, so any suggestions on how I might fix it myself would be very welcome.

Thanks

Unscrew burner and give it a good clean, also give the flame failure device a clean.

Assuming you have the ability Mark 61 suggests that is the answer , If you dont be be prepared to pay for an engineer that can

Thanks for the suggestions.

I think I will try Delicagirl's suggestion first, as its the easiest.

Mark61, can I ask another question: does the burner just unscrew by hand from the top of the hob, or does it have to be disconnected from underneath? Please excuse my ignorance, I'm not the very knowledgeable when it comes to DIY!

And Channa, my first instinct was to pay a professional, but unfortunately he's fully booked up for weeks, and it can be a struggle cooking in the van on two burners at times. If the weather improves I mostly cook outside on a Cadac bbq, but I can't rely on that in Scotland at this time of year!

I'm no expert, as far as I know, the screws are just to stop burners rattling, undo from the top, or try Delicagirl's suggestion first. The gas failure device will almost certainly need a clean too, that'll be the little probe that sticks up into the flame but doesn't create the spark. I'd have a wee bet it's in the area where the burners don't light.
Hopefully someone more knowledgeable will give a better explanation.

i let boiling milk spill over onto my 2 ring burner last summer. Part of the burner was ok but it also had a wide variety of flames, some short some tall, some quiet, some noisy - i opened all the windows and let a saucepan of water boil for a few minute. The flames and heat seemed to have removed traces of burnt-on milk and the flames gradually became normal size again.

There are two parts normally held together by screws, the burner cap, and burner skirt. Remove the screws and clean as necessary. the part of the hob that remains will no doubt be "dirty" give that a clean too reassemble and all should be good

Best policy unless youre qualified, is get a gas man to do it for you (take no chances, just not worth second guessing with gas)

There is no encroaching upon the gas system Gregg hence my advice and yes a qualified gasman ( albeit let the quals lapse) unscrewing and cleaning burners and skirts does not require a gasman

I didn't manage to unscrew the burner, but I was able to go round it with a needle, and I'm glad to say I now have 3 working gas rings again.

Thanks for the help

delighted to hear it.... the ideal device is one which is used for cleaning out calcium carbide caving lamps (which have a naked flame burning calcium carbide) - its called a p r i c k e r - but you know what this lot are like.... your problem would have disappeared under weeks of innuendo !!!!! :raofl:

i have just looked on GASSAFE Gas Safe Register | Trust the Triangle - Gas Safe Register has replaced CORGI registration. Trust the Triangle, only use a Gas Safe registered engineer. and you can specify your location, and then look for Gas Cylinder or caravan or LPG to find a fully qualified engineer. I am a bit out in the sticks in Somerset and i found about half a dozen close to me. So i will be calling on them to do a safety check for me before my next long jaunt.
Gas Safe re training are not really interested in LPG albeit they administer the register ACS are the people that do that. (legal requirement to be ACS qualified on rental vehicles) A lot of the MCEA chaps are qualified to Acops but that in this country doesn't allow you for work on rented vehicles or statics.

I am not sure where you but there will be a few ACS around WSM and Highbridge.

P.S My tutor was principal gas tutor in Evesham at the college there, but I trained in Brittany. all a bit of a muddle working for a UK company paying UK taxes and working on rental static caravans. Come to the UK and I cant work on statics .....work that out !!!

one of the categories of gas work available on Gassafe is that of "Leisure Accommodation Vehicle" which they define as:-

"A unit of accommodation for temporary or seasonal occupation that may meet requirements for construction or use as road vehicles"

i am going to call them tomorrow and see what they say as to whether this means a campervan or not. The word caravan is in their list of appliances, but not campervan per se.

GASSAFE has just told me that if one of their engineers includes LAV work on their profile that it includes campervans as well as caravans work. i have called one of their engineers so lets see what he says when he returns my call.

LAV is the correct module attached to the LPG qualification and yes covers caravans campers motorhomes . Note separate module required for 3 way fridges.

LAV is designated by BSEN 1949 2002 is current standard older vehicles had to conform to BS 5482 part 2 1977. which also covered statics. Hence most ACS card holders will have LAV creditation but not necessarily the fridge module if that makes sense
