gas adapters

Can somebody tell me the current price of LPG at the pump please?

Gawd Sorry folks. I'm having a rather dim day today! I use a fair bit of propane for cooking indoors. How much would it cost me to fill a 47kg bottle at the pumps

I thought I was going mad LOL There is only £1:50 as far as I can make out So isn't worth me buying an adaptor. I use very little gas in my camper either But it is an interesting thread.

I've got a few Flogas empty cylinders lying about, but they're butane. Can I use this adapter to refill these?

hi i would change to propane cylinders .
funky farmer .you could tip from one bottle the big one into the smaller ones .
in africa and asia thats how you very often have to get your bottles filled.
i have an lpg pump specially for doing it .
mind havent used it for awhile its hard work manually.

I can't believe it I've seen this discussed on several forums and before now there's usually a lot of negative comments but none here yet perhaps they have seen the advantages of fill your own Personally we've wife and myself have had no problem and have been filling our bottles with a ebay adapter for several years now.

you should always be careful .do it slowly . practice at home if you need to so you can do it as a habit . if you have any doubt of your capabilities
then dont do it . follow instructions carefully . as with lots of things in life this can be a dangerous thing to do. dont try it if you do doubt your capabilities .

Could be 75p a litre so 47x2 x 75 = £70.5

I don't know whether it is practical to fill a bottle this big though! You aren't supposed to fill non-fixed tanks and 6kg is easy to fill inside the back doors of the van.

Is it legal

I have noticed that a few people on this site have implied that it is frowned upon at filling stations, is this legal?

It's not illegal for you to do it, but it's usually against the terms of license of the filling station.

The terms of the license of the filling station are based on advisory notes given by the bottled gas industry who of course have a vested interest in people not filling bottles themselves. It also has a practical note in that most people are used to brimming fuel tanks, and there are some people who would not be capable of filling by volume and then checking it.

It would also be against the terms of your civil contract with say Calor gas if you have bought a bottle from them. If you bought a second hand bottle though eg Ebay, there wouldn't be a contract. I'm not sure what they can do if you break your contract with them. Probably demand their bottle back!

If you are on the North section of the M25, junction 22 at London Colney, turn-off to St Albans, 68.9p per litre at Sainsbury's

I've paid more than this in Spain.

in spain exchanging cylinders is the cheapest option .
i used to carry an lpg pump years ago when in spain with an lpg powered vehicle .pump the gas from the bottle to the tank. it was incredibly hard to find lpg pumps where you could fill up.

Official Calor Gas Response

Below is an official response from Calor Gas regarding the use of these adaptors.

Hello,

Calor Gas Ltd has recently issued a safety warning regarding members of the public filling our portable LPG cylinders at self-service autogas refuelling sites. This practice is not only unlawful but also highly dangerous as there is a strong probability for leaks to occur and cylinders to be overfilled. Calor strictly prohibits the filling of our cylinders in this manner.

The filling of LPG cylinders is potentially an extremely hazardous activity, and safe filling requires appropriate expertise and training of operators, use of certified equipment, safe working procedures and a safe environment. Automotive LPG filling stations incorporate safety measures to ensure the safe refuelling of vehicles however they do not include all of the necessary elements for filling LPG cylinders. Furthermore commercial LPG is supplied in two forms - propane and butane - filling a cylinder with the wrong type of LPG can lead to serious appliance malfunction and can cause safety devices to fail.

Members of the public who refill LPG cylinders using autogas refuelling equipment not only present a serious risk to both their own safety and the safety of others, but are also contravening UK Health and Safety Regulations, Weights and Measures and Consumer Safety legislation. These Regulations impose significant duties on the site operator to ensure the safety of both their employees and members of the public. In the event of an accident as a result of this type of activity, the site operator could be liable to prosecution.

Furthermore, Calor has taken successful court action against individuals for unauthorised filling and will continue to do so.

The full release can be viewed at http://www.calor.co.uk/about-calor/press-centre/unlawful-fil...

I hope that this clarifies the situation, and makes very clear that under NO circumstances should Calor cylinders ever be filled at autogas self service stations.

What about fitting an external fill point.

To get around any problems at the petrol station I wondered about fitting an external fill point, say next to or below the gas locker. The Gasit website gives details about fill point products you can buy but I'm not sure what hose would connect it to a calor lite propane 6kg bottle, anyone got the know how to advise ? :juggle:
