Hi, We have been using Garmin sat navs for many years and until the last trip no major problems.

We currently have a Nuvi 2797 LMT.

I updated the map just before we left - 24 Sept and made sure the avoidances were still in place.

NO Toll rds - No unpaved rds - No Uturns - No car pools or ferries. The van is entered as a Bus.

This trip it tried to send me along 3 toll rds, 4 unpaved tracks, and started recalculating on several occasions when we were on
long straight stretches of highway.

I have just reinstalled the latest maps and await results.

We have the Garmin Camper 760LMT-D and similarly updated just before we left on the 16th Sept.

Ours is set for the same avoidances as your and it also tried to take us down a unpaved road once :scared:

Apart from that it performed well

My Garmin 760 either works perfectly or acts like a t**t, there is no inbetween. :mad1:

I regard it as a complete waste of good money .... even the Garmin rear view camera failed. I shall not be buying anything else from Garmin.

Garmin Nuvi 54

I swear, that my Garmin Nuvi 54, gets worse, at taking me down poorer roads, when set to "fastest", whenever I update the mapping!

I wondered about getting one of the Camper versions, but, from what has been said, don't think I'll bother.

It is a frustrating bit of kit but when working well gives miles of stress free motoring.I had the same problems this year in spain but have learned to question it when it tries to take me off a perfectly good main road onto a dirt track or worse.
What I do is tap the route at the top of the screen when in driving mode, stationary I might add, then top left tap the 3 bars and tap on map.You can see the roads it intends to take you down and then add any via's as appropriate.

Thanks for the replies, always intereresting to find out others opinions, sorry that should read "sometimes interesting to find out etc etc".

99% of the time the Garmin is tickety boo and behaves herself, but occasionally goes astray.

I have tried both fast time, and the fuel save settings, but with the same results.

Apparently the Off road" bit is partly to do with poor road classification in some remote areas in some Countries, ie listing a B road as an A.

I have six months before the next Continental trip to figure it out.

I`m very very pleased with mine and have no intention of changing it

I`ve found the best setting to be " Less Fuel " but even that sometimes wants to take us down some very strange roads which i just ignore :rolleyes2:

Our TomTom has all the avoidance settings but one thing it cannot judge is overhanging branches.
We lost a high rear tail light and gained some heavy scratches before we were forced to reverse a quarter mile down one narrow lane. Grrrrhhhh.

Re Tolls I've noticed our Garmin takes us onto Toll roads when set to No Tolls but it's just for a free section normally around busy town centres.

I wonder if they were previously non payable roads and garmin hasn’t kept up.

They don't keep up. My Garmin is still telling me it is a 40 mph speed limit through the road works on the A1 at Gateshead. The work was finished nearly 2 years ago. :D

Have I missed something here? Free sections aren't toll roads, are they? If they were toll roads, then I think that we would have to pay a toll!

No because we didn't have to Pay and in some cases took us off in sight of peage. On our Michelin Atlas they where shown as a Toll rd

What annoys me about the 760 with dimensions input is that it will divert through a housing estate, for example, rather than proceed to a major junction to either turn left of right - all to save a minute off the journey time. When you're abroad on unfamiliar turf you don't know until you in too deep to turn - grrrr.

The first thing to learn about ANY satnav is not to follow it implicitly, be prepared to use your own judgement as to a road being suitable or not. I have used all sorts of navi systems for both road and marine, and without doubt the Garmin 760 is one of the best road based satnav's. We are currently in Northern Spain and the Garmin has thousands of POI's in it including all the WC ones, and we would be lost without it.
