Garmin Camper sat-nav at ALDI on 26th March

My mate Alan got one yesterday, and asked me to go round to have a look as he couldn't work out why it took almost 7 hours to download the stuff on it, apparently it comes empty with zilch on it, but we still could not find the maps on it, until we downloaded something from the garmin website, then another almost 2 hours,,, why so long, tom tom its straight from the box.:cool1::cool1::cool1::cool1::cool1::cool1:

Mine was was up and running straight out of the box, fully loaded with all the maps, the poi's and the camper poi's, I then put all the WC poi's on in about 3 mins and all my other poi's in about 5 mins. Admittedly the Garmin 760 did want you to upgrade to the latest maps when first plugged into a PC but that would have only have been a couple of hours, and so far I haven't got round to that

I do not disbelieve you, he insisted that when he plugged up to the computer, he opened the pc icon to see the contents and opened it, the garmin had nothing on it whatsoever, and can confirm that, there was no maps on it all he managed to download was poi/s and some other stuff but not the maps, that's why I looked through the garmin website to see if there was something amiss and sure enough we had to download another program to get the maps on it, he has been on the phone 2 night and he can't work out why the poi/s do not show on the map, all he is getting is restaurants/petrol stations and some other stuff but not what is after. I will have another go 2morrow, I told him he should have purchased a tom tom lol lol :cool1::cool1::cool1::cool1::cool1::cool1::cool1::cool1::cool1:

That is odd, mine was running ok before I did the map updates as well, and contrary to what I read on some forums, I did not need a memory card to update the maps either, I did get one beforehand just in case, it was only about £4 and when I start to transfer my favourites from my old tomtom I might need the extra memory then

I believe what you are saying, but what I can't believe is why on earth he didn't just take it back? It doesn't sound like he even tried to switch it on before connecting it to a PC. There are anyway loads of files in a GPS memory that you don't see in a normal file on a PC, but you would always expect to see at least something after plugging it in to a PC. As for getting a TomTom, that is really a personal choice and each to his own, but I personally don't get on with TomTom. I find the Garmin's far easier to understand, easier to load things on to, and in use they are far quicker to update if you deviate from the set course. And I really have used both TT's and Garmin's extensively, and as you would normally expect every single one of them, from both manufactures, have worked straight out of the box. I currently have 2 TomTom 'truck' versions, and now 4 Garmin's (!). The 2 TT's and and possibly 2 of the Garmin's are now up for sale.
I hope your mate gets it sorted, Summer is coming, time to go wild camping!

Mine took about 5 hours stopping once for losing connection with the Garmin server.
I put this down to doing it upstairs on my IMac, wifi is crap in my upstairs office. Should have done it downstairs on my laptop to be nearer the hub.

I recommend going to the advanced options and downloading to the device and the PC - apart from anything else it makes it easier to resume a download. If it's stuck for more than 15 mins, I recommend restarting the download as it's probably stalled.

Just as a test, where is this bridge?

I'd like to try my TomTom and see if it passes the test or not ...

Sorry for the late reply - There are 2 bridges, both in Needham Market in Suffolk. The co-ordinates are 52.150210, 1.058671 and 52.156855, 1.051150.

It'll be interesting to hear how well TomTom does...

well I had a phone call this morning from my friend and guess what he took the garmin back to Aldi and went straight to Halfords where he purchased a tomtom for £129 reduced form £179, and I do admit I like tomtom its quite a good unit, and workrd out of the box, no uploading maps or anything, and he has life time updates unlike me for my start 60,not long ago I paid £35 for updates, do I want change it ??? no I'm happy with it as I find it so easy to upload stuff on it, i have the whole of Europe covered in poi/s 22 categories to be exact. in the end its all down to end user as which model of gps they find eays to use.:have fun::have fun::have fun::have fun::have fun::have fun::have fun:

Well I have tried these two low bridges, plus another adjacent low bridge over Bridge Street, and TomTom Truck avoids all three :D

I would call that a result then! However he could have also bought the Garmin Camper760 from Halfords for £199 under their price match promise.

Interestingly, the roads in question under these three bridges are shown on the map in a different colour and with a much thinner line width.

I wonder if the Garmin differentiates them on its map?
