fuel prices

With the cost of Diesel now 115p / litre at my local garage I have decided to try veg oil

My tank cost £65 to fill up last summer its £80 now . With Veg costing 75p litre even at 20% its a big cost saving on long trips and a no brainer if no damage will occur

The concensous of people who actually use the stuff is so long as you have the right engine, you mix and don't push your luck then no damage will occur. If you want to run SVO then you need to be careful and modify.

After some research I'm going for 20% veg 2% white spirit and the rest straight diesel. I'm going to intersperse this with straight diesel for short trips.

Are there any other Veg users out there to give advice or any comments :confused:

I know it's a completely different engine etc. but some people in the Trafic club have ruined injector pumps by running on "straight" veg oil, apparently its too thick in its raw state and the pump spindles snap under the strain.

Expensive mistake!

I went down this route before asking same questions and looke:):)d into biofuel, A friend of mine who is in the O ring manufacturing advised me against it as he said it could ruin any seals:mad:, This could lead to more damage:mad: and expense,I decided against it in the end,But this is my opinion only. Not saying whether he was right or wrong.

Cheers Andy.

Fuel at morrisons locally down to £1.09 could be a good sign

Yup 2.8 jtd from yorks and always happy to save a few quid when applicable, I have followed the 'concept' closely.

My conclusion for what it is worth ( bearing in mind my mechanical prowess with a multimeter:eek:)

Messrs Fiat Peugeout Talbot and Citroen didn't I suspect at the design stage remotely consider that us lot would be eventual customers.

The engines are designed to run on pump diesel, simple as.

Whilst there are far cleverer people out there than I will ever be in the world of mechanical propulsion, I have not seen a tried and tested solution that doesnt involve a bit of buggering about.

It seems that the 'engineers' looking for the utopia cant agree between themselves. ...so for me I will plod on and use pump diesel.

When I looked at doing this there wasn't a big saving as the veg oil wasn't that much cheaper. Not sure I fancy trying it with my current van, we don't do a really high mileage & weighing up the possible risks against the savings for me it isn't worth it.

Approx prices where we are going
Uk within 10 miles 1.09.9p :mad::confused::mad:
France 99p :)
Spain 84p :D:D
Portugal 89p :D

I am trying to work out how much I need to get to the nearest French supermarket, could be running on fumes by the time we get of the train.

Yep its a worry but thats the 20% and mix in a small percentage of white spirit to thin it first :)
Thanks for the reply

Thats why the mix of only 20% with a small bit of white spirit to thin the oil. Any more I think you need to look at getting mods made, people are running my engine of SVO (straight veg oil) but they need to preheat the oil or start it on diesel and then switch to SVO when hot.

I'm willing to have a go for a while and see what happens, maybe a mistake but my understanding is its the pump that might suffer and they are not hugely expensive. If things carry on the way they are going this will be something we are all looking more closley at :D :D

Yes the savings are not going to be big on a single tank, 75p a litre but I can only use 20% mixed with diesel. But we do plenty of miles a year so over the year its quite significant.

You would have problems with your newer van as they are less tolerant.

hi all:) i run my van on wvo(waste veg oil from restuarants not chippies, most of them tend to use slabs of fat which after used up turn back to solids!!)i have built a manual heat exchanger with a second tank (6gals) i will not put wvo thru my main tank etc it needs heating up so it is roughly the same viscosity as diesel, running thru the main system tends to clog the main fuel filter!!!!this is why i built a 2nd tank system. they can actually be bought for@£600.
there are places where bio-diesel bought as 200 ltrs or more can be purchased for @60p a litre if you want to put it straight through your tank.

i only use wvo tho' on a gud run where my engine stays hot and the oil is constantly heated i don't use for short runs of say 5/10 mls not worth the aggro.

if anyone is interested i can give you sites to peruse, a couple of numbers for biodiesel, and a drawing of the system i have built.

under no circumstances am i saying that its suitable for all engines etc
thats for you to decide.

i am however led to believe that in some parts of europe biodiesel is widely available and even mercedes warranty covers the use of bio, but strangely not here in the uk! i stand to be corrected on that score:)

i make my own bio derv it costs me about 80p a liter stuff number 10

i also make my own i but 10 ltrs of pump feul every 30 days thats me the rest is souced locally thanks to number 10 as well 77p i do my own for and thats only because i can get high octane race feul from work to build the octane level up on the bio or it would cost another 2/3p ltr to make

Just popped into Stoke and, as always, the fuel at the JET station is 4 pence cheaper than the supermarket, how do JET do it?
