Fuel gauge

In 54 years driving I have driven a multitude of vehicles 2. 4. 6 plus wheels. They all had one thing in common. A fuel gauge that registered full when full. Say 16 gallons. Empty when empty 0 gallons. But when halfway. Only held about 5 gallons. The first half the tank 250 miles half to empty 130 miles. Any one else had that. Or is it just me and me imagination

It's just so you don't run out. You probably could go a lot further on the second half, but best to refill :)

Thats because the top half is bigger than the bottom. :p :ROFLMAO:

Most people fill beyond the quoted tank capacity. ie into any expansion space plus the filler neck.

The fuel light on my old 2.8 ducato came on once just going into fuel station took 63 lts with an 80 ltr tank left me 17 lts once fuel light came on at least i could estimate how far i could push it

its quite common for gauges to the wildly inaccurate in the middle bit. most common is for the top half to last a lot longer than the bottom half.

my current xtrail takes ages to get down to half , then rapidly plumets to the red....bur i can only ever get about two thirds of its quoted capacity in . guess the only way to be really sure what mileage its got left when it hits the red is to run it till it stops, but its less stressful just to refil.

My 2.8jtd ran out, as in spluttered and stopped, my fault entirely - however when I filled it to the brim it would only take 75 litres despite it supposedly having a 80 litre tank.

Level ground on the forecourt?

I converted my fuel tank so that it takes the fuel from the side furthest way from the filler neck first and then moves the rest of it across :)

That way when ever i refuel the new fuel goes into the empty space left by the fuel i`ve used so it stays fresher (y)

Wooie its not April the 1st:unsure:

My gauge seemed ok at first but then iy showed too much fuel.
I go on miles reset trip meter and look to fill up after 300 miles !

I also rely on resetting my mileage to zero. When it reaches 300 it is time to start looking for diesel normally it can do just over 400. Much better then my previous 3 mohos 2.8jtd. With them I started looking at 250. Would go 320. With wind behind. Ref your thread wooie I also checked the date. As I rely on the motion of the Moho to mix it.

how big is your tank? if it is 90 litres (std?), maxing out at 400 miles would mean just over 20 MPG? would you not expect more?

Yes my tank is maybe 80 maybe 90 maybe 70 litres.
Possible the gauge is now more accurate ?
Assuming 80 litres = 17 galls = over 500 miles..yet I fill up at 300 miles.
The gauge shows about 1/3 but I do not trust it !
