hi
i am looking for some advice on 2 problems i am having just now

Fridge- only working sometimes. it is getting gas, battery and electric, but sometimes it is chilling, then go to check it a couple of hours later and it is no longer cold, and the ice box has defrosted. go to check again and it is chilling again. does anyone have any ideas what the problem might be. the fridge is a electrolux

van pulling to left
i have had it checked at a garage and they say they can not find a fault. it is pulling quite badly to the left. the steering wheel is now not sittiing straight. when driving in a straight line i have to pull the steering wheel slightly to keep the van going in a straight line. the camper is a Merc 207 on a G plate
Many thanks to anyone who replys with advice

need more info on the fridge like what are you running it on,to be sure if it is acting up put on 240v for a few hours or overnight best, the other 2 power sources can be the cause for a couple of reasons but if it acts up on240 it will need taking out.
take the van to a proper mot garage and ask them to check your tracking and front tyres and steering rack and ball joints, just a process of elimination. let us know about the fridge

Regarding your steering pulling over, try swapping your front wheels over from side to side you will probably find that it cures the problem or pulls the other way,as its normally a tyre wear problem.

Good idea re the tyres

Are your kingpins well greased ?

Do you have any play in the steering ? the merc box is adjustable to take up any free play

i think asking someone if their kingpins are well greased is a bit personal, personally

Re Fridge

Is it level this is very important with this type of fridge

As stated check on 240 v first if this is ok then you can start testing the 12v(low volts high resistance etc) and gas operation (rust in jet * etc)

I have added this in case anybody else has similar problems my fridge is 26 years old every now and again it suffers from low gas flame and poor cooling I have found this to be rust flakes in the jet, coming from the steel pipe from the thermostat to the burner to clear it I disconnect the pipe from the thermostat connect to tyre pump put about 60psi in it bingo working again (one day will replace pipe)

If it's only on gas that you are having a problem - are you using propane? butane stops working at temps close to freezing.

Your gas bottle has fallen off and is wedged in the steering.
Steering sounds like tyre wear. If the fridge problem is with all power sources then possibly levelling.

The fridge - sounds like a couple of possible causes, first and easiest to fix is that there is some rust/corrosion blocking the boiler tube. You cant see the blockage and the only way to fix it is to take the fridge out, leave upside down for a few days, give the odd shake, then put back in and let it settle for a day. Usually that clears any rust from the boiler tube.

Second is that you have a leak in the ammonia system - usually the telltale is a yellowish crystal formation around the leak. The fridge cools until the pressure increases and the leak opens up. Its usually terminal and you need to get the unit regassed or replaced.

The Merc steering - could be a range of things, jack up the front end and check for movement in the kingpins as suggested, check the suspension bushes, check the steering freeplay by wobbling the wheels and turning the steering wheel (no more than 15mm free movement) - usually you can adjust freeplay in the steering box.

Other rare causes can be the U bolts have come loose on the axle, centre bolt on springs sheared, worn or loose bushes.

you could have got an egg in your tyre, could have fallen out of your fridge, lol, no really, this happened to me, i just had my wheels aligned and a new tyre on, job dun

RE steering, try all of the previous advice, it really is a job for professionals as there are a lot of things it could be and discernment on each possibility requires experience. Most garages will find your problem within 10 minutes though. Unless it's worst car scenario...if its been in an accident and the chassis is bent. I'd swap front tyres for back first, and if no joy leave it to a garage, but make sure you ask them if they find something "will it definitely solve the problem" as some garages aren't so careful with customer's money.
