Water tank

Hi .
In answer to your original question if I saw an additional tap fitted at the sink my first question would be what is wrong with the main tank and would start looking for other faults.with carefully use of bleach etc. foul tanks are easily cleaned.

If the worry is that the tank is full of grey gunk and infected/unsanitary water - I'm not sure it would be a good move to use it for anything other than the toilet I'd give it and the pipework a good clean and sterilise them.

If you are looking at a new tap, plumbing, etc why not just replace the existing tank and plumbing rather than have 2, one of which you suspect of being grim?

I tend to be a tad OCD with my water tank (likely cos I do have OCD/anxiety issues) but I use it for everything other than drinking directly - having seen people washing their toilet cassettes with the fresh water taps on several occasions.

I use puriclean a few times a year and also manually clean the inside of the tank at the same time.

Our old van was near 20 when we sold her on and the water tank was clean as the proverbial. We used a tank cleaning system every couple of years and used it as drinking water if we wanted to with never an issue. As the tank cap was under a seat it was easy to observe and pull the drain plug for that last run home so I literally could see the state it was in. Pristine.

As for the separate tap in the kitchen as soon as one sees a mod it for us would raise alarms as to what else had been modded and why? Further by doing it to a locker you are effectively deneying the use of that locker to down the line owners who may have very different needs. There is an article in one of the nagizines this month on that very point that what suits one and is a bonus is a serious negative to another. That is life.

We do not drink the water from our fresh water tank for obvious reasons, and like most draw off our drinking and kettle water from a 10ltr plastic Jerry can container which we fill from a tap. This works to a point but the container is always in the way on the floor, is heavy and awkward to pour when full, and is a little messy.

We also carry spare fresh water in another 25 ltr stored in an external locker. This locker is conveniently positioned under the kitchen sink and the thought occurred to me that it would be quite easy for me to install a pump to pump water from this container, to a separate fresh water tap fitted close to the edge of the kitchen sink and in doing so would solve the original problem.

My question is this, my wife worries that a separate tap in this position alongside the main tap would perhaps spoil the look of her kitchen and affect the resale value of the van (Autotrail Savannah). What does the collective think please???

Hi,

When this topic came up several years ago I mentioned that we had spent six weeks in 2000 ish in the company of prof Basil Jarvis the foremost microbiologist this Country had at that time.

I asked him "how long is drinking water safe to drink from a purpose built food grade plastic tank".

His reply was " that providing the tank was flushed through yearly with milton or similar steroliser and that the water had come from a dependable
source , potable, that it will be perfectly safe for several weeks.

This will not change the mind of anyone not happy with the thought of drinking from the main tank, but these are the facts.

Light is the catalyst for photosynthesis ie no light no growth.

i filled up in wales once at a port from a normal looking outside tap later that day found it to be sea water, now on a different van but still don’t trust the tank i carry 4 x 5ltr bottles of drinking water easily rinsed we would definetley struggle using 10 litre ones to fill kettle etc, a wet wipe round the tap before use ensures that johnny foreigner isn’t going to poison me,

Then do a water system sanitize and solve the problem instead of avoiding it.Sanidumps: How to Sanitize Your RV Water System

Before following the above instructions, be aware that it calls for your hot water tank to be sterilised with bleach, which some hot water tanks/heaters (e.g Truma) don't like. Caravan & Motorhome Club: PDF on cleaning your water system gives the CMC's recommendations for cleaning UK motorhomes as opposed to American and Aussie ones.

I don't use anything special in my water tank, I can see it is clean by removing the inspection cover. We drink the water from the tank.

We are heading off to a Meet this Friday and the van has not been used for a few weeks but the fresh water tank has been drained down. I know there is water available when we arrive so I will put a few gallons of water in the tank before we leave. It will swill round while travelling and will be drained on arrival. That means the tank has been freshly treated with Chlorinated water and will be fit for purpose.
