French supermarkets to sell fuel at cost

As the supermarkets claim their margins are about 2 cents a litre I don’t think there’s going to be much of a saving, good publicity though.

Still better than the supermarkets in Uk I would suggest! Their prices seem to go up fast and come down slow...and they increased their profit margin too IIRC?

This is at the behest of the French government, surprisingly, considering the extent to which the law prevents retailers from operating as they see fit. There is concern in some quarters (particularly those trading primarily as filling station operators) that the effect will be to drive some filling stations out of business, which will have adverse effects in the longer term. There have even been suggestions that refineries should sell fuel to distributors at cost price, which hardly seems a recipe for long-term supply.
