French and Spanish gas.

I have refillable but a friend who is fairly new to motor homing is about to set off to Spain and France with a calor bottle….. I explained calor is not obtainable on the continent but am not sure if he can purchase a cylinder in Spain which will also be available in France. Also are the pigtails to the onboard regulator the same for all propane or not? Looking for people who have done this as I would not wish to give any advice that is not proven.

I have given him some advice on apps and also the National Parks but I reckon he is going to be on a fairly steep learning curve, but then again we all were once.

I've never used other than French propane in exchange bottles which Ive obtained from the Intermarche supermarket chain. You just need one of these to adapt the UK propane to the french bottle

This is the 10kg bottle 2 yrs ago it was 22€ with 3€ deposit after you have a bottle there are self service racks at many locations


As for Spain bottles are not so easy to get there so he'll need to look out for a empty bottle at boot sales Repsol or Cepsa are the most common but he'll need another adaptor I carry 2 French bottles so one is always full when I enter Spain

I forwarded all the info to him then went to chat with him again. He now knows the situation regarding gas and understands what will be required when he gets to Spain. I also gave him the low down on Spanish and French Aires as being overnight parking not camping though some are more flexible than others and also the national parks in Spain and Portugal. I suppose forewarned is forearmed which is a good job as he headed off on Sunday nights ferry to Santander! Thanks for your efforts, he is away for two months so should have sorted a lot of things out by then. I think he will have tales to tell on return!

On Spain, Croatia and Greece take s 1" BSP LH thread adapter to your Calor bottle is fillable at Gas distribution depots. The small (10lb?) Butane bottles have this connection as normal and is fillable as above.
