I’ve decided I’ve had enough of paying Virgin Media loads of dosh each month so planning to just have freeview channels. Plus probably use NowTv for occasionally buying extra channels as I understand that you can subscribe just for a day/week or month for sports and a month for other channels.
What I would like to be able to do is record stuff at home then either copy to a stick/external drive or just take the player with me and play back the recordings on my Avtex TV in the camper.
Anybody doing above and can give me recommendations on kit and any other advice please as I’m new to this (been spoon fed my virgin media for years providing me tv,broadband and phone)
Many thanks

Humax for Freeview and Freesat

Hi Duncan

Plenty of info on here. Search for Humax on here and also on web.

Choose which variant you want, Freesat or Freeview and buy the appropriate Humax box.

Get one with a hard drive, preferably 2gb, and record all you want at home. Then take your Humax away with you and play all your recordings via your Avtex, both boxes powered by 12 volts.

Or watch live tv via the box in your motorhome if you can get a signal.

Welcome to WC. ;)

Does your TV have record facility on usb?
Recently, as I was off to Spain/Portugal and knew the Satellite wouldn't work, I just recorded a few hours on a SD card in the weeks before (serial record) whilst MoHo was parked up on the drive way. Didn't get round to watching it all.
I also have a Now TV HDMI stick which I move to the MoHo TV sometimes to use, using the phone as a hotspot.

I'll have a search here for Humax.
I've read on the Humax website about the Freeview Player HD Recorder FVP-5000T, that looks pretty good.
Didn't realise they are 12v, suppose most is going that way.

I get that Freesat is for satellite, I don't have a dish at home, do have a portable small dish that came with the van but never used and sits in the loft, to much messing about. So think Freesat is out, my understanding is you get more channels but that's about it.
My understanding is Freeview boxes work with a terrestrial aerial but need internet connection for on demand services and to upgrade the box. I've got an old aerial on roof at home that works and one fitted to the roof of the van so that's ok.
Can you get Freeview from internet into instead of using an aerial (for home) ?

I believe my Avtex TV can record to a usb stick or external drive but not tried it yet. Good idea it's not fixed to van so keep it indoors therefore simple to record stuff. Not sure if my home TV can record to USB, it's a Samsung smart tv (it's the user that is dumb !!), 7 years old soma be not, will have a look.

I'd like to copy our DVDs onto a stick/external drive, I believe you can but different TVs read different formats.

Didn't think about using NowTv in the van, that's a thought planning together a MiFi unit so wife can still watch it when I'm off with the phone.

Can either the Humax box or the NowTv mirror my iPhone/iPad as that's the other thing I want to get sorted.

Many thanks for the info.

Subvision av player box

Submission make an adaptor if you have Usb on TV. You can then copy all media to pen drives or even show your own photos of ad cards etc onto TV. The Sumvision costs about 27GBP and can be plugged into most tv's.

I wish I was bright enough to know what you all were talking about. It maybe the kit I need.
I have a Avtex W 153 D tv, a Maxview RG405 DS1 with no obvious power going to it, unless power is coming down the co ax under a seat and some kind of amplifier in the wardrobe that does have power going to it.. This was fitted by the previous owners.

I've done a major edit to this post. It was verging on the pathetic. TBH i've spent so much time trying to sort out the set up on this TV, I'm getting pretty close to the end of my tether. A summery. The Avtex was in the van when I bought it. I'm not convinced all the wiring is there. There's a Scart lead, A coax out and a choice of 240 or 12 volt power leads. Under the seats, on top of the water tank is the maxview. It has a coax out, plus the other end of the scart, but no power in. Or even any means of powering it.

Seriously thinking of binning the system while keeping the tv.( It plays DVD's very well. ) and then either not bothering or putting in new Freeview and aerial.

You can convert your dvd's to most formats using Freemake Video converter on your computer. Your choice of format depends on how you will plug into your TV. Convert to Mpeg and you can put them on USB stick or portable hard drive and they will play on your TV. The downside is the file size will be quite large possibly limiting the amount you can store. MP4 files are much smaller.

If you convert to mp4 format then you will need a media player like the Sumvision Sumvision Cyclone Micro 4 Media Player: Amazon.co.uk: Camera & Photo . You plug your usb stick etc. into that and plug the player into the TV. Check out reviews on Youtube. Other players are available.

I use an old version of Freemake (2.3.4) from here Download Old Versions of Freemake for Windows - OldVersion.com
as newer versions are more trouble. I just convert to mpeg and use a large USB stick.

Mr B.

I'll have a look at Submission adapter, sounds interesting.
Freemaker looks like just what I need and i's free which is a result. Generally use a mac but have a windows laptop that can sit in the corner and convert my DVDs, thanks.
Now to cross swards with Virgin Media to see if they will give me a decent deal for broadband only (I do like having fibre right into the house) or will leave them completely.

Thanks for your help.
