Right, now I have your attention, anyone got any ideas where there are organised foraging outings, (yorkshire area). We have a couple of books, but never seem to see anything that we can eat, but plenty we can't.
It would be nice doing a food walk at one of our Wild Meets.
Any ideas.

Hey zeezee, might be wrong but I think that the foraging courses you are looking for are mostly down south. Locally you may have to make do with fungi outings which should start in september. The whole foraging bit is not always as easy people think. I have been doing it on and off for twenty odd years and still look for people with more experience to teach me more.
Apart from the obligatory nettles, wild rasps etc the best place to start is the coast. Tis a lot easier to identify the plant life on the coast.
Winkles are fairly easy to find and limpets even easier. Always wondered how many of us would survive if shops totally dissapeared;)
 
A quick note to prove the point that forraging is not always so easy. After watching a Ray Mears programme on how to catch razor fish by pouring salt down the holes in the sand at low tide, I promptly went out and found a good beach, waited for low tide and spent two hours pouring salt down all the holes i could find. Waited quietly like an aboriginy standing over the holes after pouring kilos of saxo down them. Nowt happened then when I started to wonder what I was doing wrong an old guy approached me and asked what I was doing. After explaining that I was after razor fish, and using a tecnique that Ray Mears uses, the old guy started laughing and told me there was no razor fish at that beach and that the holes were made by worms.
I left the beach straight away with a red face and a nipple growing out of my forehead:eek:
 
We missed a foraging outing, dont know who organised it, it was at Applecross, went in the shop, a poster said 10.30 am start. what time was it, 10 45.........
Something will turn up, I will look in the free Dales paper thats in the Station at Ribblehead on saturday, there might be something in there. Anyone else got any ideas.

Time to get foraging for sloes.... it's sloe gin/sloe whisky making season. Start now and a very good christmas could be had by all..hic :D:D
 
Not tried sloe whiskey... same recipe? (pint each of sloes, sugar and gin?)
