British tourists to be banned from France from Saturday
British tourists are to be banned from France from Saturday amid concern over Omicron cases in the UK.

France is banning travel to and from the UK without “compelling reasons” - which does not include travel or business - from Saturday morning, reports Sky News.

French nationals and their spouses will be exempt from the new rules.

It comes after the UK yesterday reported its highest number of Covid cases since the start of the pandemic.

UK has now opened up to all the red list countries and are letting all those in hotel isolation out perhaps thats what put the wind up the French cause people would fly to UK then cross to France

First heard about this on the radio this morning as well. Checking the French. Gov. Thingie. Nowt.
Are we looking forward to another “ stopatom” year for 2022? Stir crazy init.

I already posted this on the other thread.
It includes a link to the the letter (in French) from the French government.

France restrictions - full details

We now have now a full statement from the French prime minister's office, about the new restrictions being placed on travellers from the UK.
It says as Omicron spreads "extremely quickly" in the UK, the French government has decided to reimplement compelling reasons for travel between the countries and reinforce mandatory tests at departures and arrivals.
It says: "According to the British government’s own words, the United Kingdom is about to face a 'landslide' linked to the Omicron variant in the upcoming days.
"Therefore, starting from this Saturday morning (00:00), the following rules will be established for travel between the United Kingdom and France:
  • A compelling reason will be mandatory for travellers leaving or going to the United Kingdom, for both unvaccinated and vaccinated people. (See list of compelling reasons below*). These compelling reasons do not include professional and tourist trips. However, these compelling reasons will not apply to French citizens, their partners and children, who will still be able to come to France
  • Before their departure, vaccinated people will have to show a negative test (PCR or antigen) taken less than 24h ago, which falls into line with the measures that were already in place for unvaccinated people
  • Every traveller coming from the United Kingdom will have to register, prior to their trip, on a digital platform to indicate their destination address in France. This platform will generate prefectural decrees ordering the mandatory isolation of every unvaccinated and vaccinated traveller in the location of their choice. This mandatory quarantine can be lifted after 48h, under the conditions of showing the proof of a new negative test (PCR or antigen

These rules come into force from midnight on Saturday and travel is for compelling reasons only. No business or tourist trips though hgv drivers are, rightfully, allowed unrestricted access.

We already have a ferry booked for just after Easter. This was to ensure that we could obtain a dog friendly cabin. I paid a bit extra for a flexible ticket so, if we do have to cancel, the loss will not be too great.
I very much doubt any bans on travel will stay in force for very long, maybe a month at the most. So, fingers crossed, you’ll be able to make it over here at Easter. 🐣

Cannot understand why folk want to travel during this very bad bug, stay at home with family for once. :)

France closed its borders to people travelling from the UK for business or tourism at 23:00 GMT on Friday It is not the only country tightening its controls. Italy, Greece and Portugal announced that visitors from the EU will need to present a negative test result on arrival. Meanwhile, in the Netherlands, Dutch health experts have said the country should go into a "strict" lockdown.

It isn't some where I'd feel safe anyway better off at Home
European leaders are reinstating coronavirus restrictions as the new Omicron variant continues to spread across the continent.
Germany and Portugal are among nations announcing post-Christmas curbs and greater social distancing measures.

I am just back from Spain. I felt very safe in Spain they have relatively low levels of covid infection and are highly vaccinated. Everyone wears masks, even sometimes outside where I don't think it necessary.
France is similar but somewhat higher infection levels, but nothing like as high as the uk. Those countries are only imposing restrictions to protect their population. We would have lower levels of infection if our Government cared enough about the populations health to react quickly to the virus.
Travel only spreads infection to the extent that the traveller socially contacts people. We are much more exposed at home as rather than walking outside in Spain away from others, we are carefully visiting family, sometimes inside as it is bloody cold.

The latest figures show that Spain is fast catching up with the UK, the daily new cases per head of population are running at approx. 80% of UK.
