Does anyone have any experience of the Transit Duratorq TDCi 2.0 litre engine? The seller is claiming 125bhp and I wondered how this would compare to the Merc 2.2 (127bhp) and the Fiat 2.8JTD (128bhp).
This is purely a question about the engine side of things, I already know how easy Transits are to steal :(

Del

All I know about them is my mechanic says they are bomb proof and a lot cheaper to work with than Merc engines. He doesn't rate Fiats.

Personally I would go for the Merc no hesitation. Ford and Fiat like garages to much. Merc spares might be more expensive but from experience they don’t need them as often as the other two. Hope this helps. Retired HGV mechanic.

Bought a brand new torneo in 2005 fitted with the 2.litre durotoque, put 200000 mile on it,only once did it fail to start, clutch, egr valve, gear change linkage, ball joints were the only problem but the egr played up more than l was happy with, the previous mk which was the banana was the one l would go for if l had the choice as they are a much simpler engine although less fuel efficient, incidentally l put a similar mileage on the banana and didn't get get though the clutch saving 900 quid.

This is very subjective because my current van (Fiat) is heavier than my old van (Ford), has 150bhp and is automatic.... having said all of which, I preferred the feel of the Ford somehow. The Fiat is cleaner, more economical, smarter, but just not quite so good to drive.

I expect others will disagree!

Unless ford have changed a lot in the last few years i would stay well away, mercs are good engines but im not a fan of there g/boxes,i think fiat use the sofim engine, the old 2.8 was a good one,but fiat have way to much wiring inside them which tends to go bonkers at times.

I look at it this way. %75 of all motorhomes are Fiat Ducatos. Many ok most have Fiat engines. If they were crap, motorhome builders wont use em and many millions of builders across Europe wont either. They do so they are great engines. Merc engines are in sprinter vans like the older ones I see which are rust boxes. The engines arnt AMG engines like in their sports cars. They are van engines. They are well made but from what I know no better or worse than others. Peugeot Boxers like mine use Ford Transit Engines. They are used by millions of builders and the like across the UK and are the most popular van in the UK. If they were crap, such people wont buy them. They are easy to work on, cheep to service and last forever. Dont worry about the engine, worry about the habitation area. Trust me. I used to work on big diesel engines. They are all excellent.

Well I've tried it and it was as good as the Fiats I've driven, but not 100% sure about the van layout so need time to think about it, I have to say that the gearchange was very smooth though.

Hmm, well we had the 2ltr mk6 panel van and fuel pump gave in. Had new one fitted but the garage made a mistake and destroyed the thing. But since then we have had another van with the 2.4 in it and its done 198k now and still sweet as a nut. But we have also bought our Motorhome with 30k on the Clock. At 39k the timing chain snapped, had a remanufactured engine fitted from Vege. Last week that engine jumped some teeth on the timing 12 weeks out of warranty. So I just bought yet another engine but a brand new one direct from Ford . So £8000 ish later we are wondering how long this one might keep running. So I think with any motor it's pot luck!!

in my experience the mechanicals are the last thing to worry about , all makes get lemons but anything mechanical can be fixed , any fleet manager will tell you that sometimes its the particular driver that will get problems with any vehicle. body size and shape (layout in a motorhome) youre stuck with , if its wrong itll always be wrong. but always test drive before buying, sometimes the instant you sit in the drivers seat you know its no good for you.

A ford owner will tell you fords best and likewise a fiat owner will tell you theirs is best. I own non of the engines you are asking about but as a retired mechanic I have experience of the three and would only have a Merc powered vehicle. The reasons there are so many fiats is because price and supply reasons. You only get what you pay for hence Merc being the most expensive.

Ok merc a great engine debatable imho ,what about the rust on mercs?
Do we all like the soft long brake pedal on a merc ? Debatable again !

The op was asking about engines not bodywork and brakes.

Cal just trying to point out the fact all badge have issues with all variants ,there’s loads of issues with the merc engines but not all .some go for millions others dont my eldest son does a parcel del comp based n new bridge and the mercs ain’t as good as used to be and or made out to be (engine and gearbox) wise

The original question was purely about engines and the Merc is the best all day long. We all know about the issues ford have and fiat aren’t much better.

Do a search for used vans with over 600k on the clock, not hard to find out which manufacturer has the most vehicles still on the road after high mileage.

Which is probably the reason of the rust rumour, people are looking at 10/15 year old Sprinters with many hundreds of thousands on the clock. The competitors are no longer on the road. :p

Cal we all have our opinions and thoughts you and I both not on the tools now have knowledge that other don’t but we both know they all have faults under the skin
Now you must admit to that surely

I agree all engines have faults but the Merc has less than the other two. It’s the reason all the delivery courier vans are Mercs and not fiats and fords.

Nothing to do with the financial incentives that are on offer by any chance?

Think this is we agree to disagree as I am laughing here cal typing this
Have you hung up the merc ovys?😀
