FON - WIFI on the move

Just got the really small FON box and spent 2 hours trying to get it set up.... instructions confusing and bleedin useless!!!
I am sat downstairs using the laptop on FON, with the FON box connected upstairs and I only have 4 bars of signal strength, I really cant see how anyone would be able to use my WIFI (the whole idea of having FON) unless they were parked in my garden!!!!
This will probably mean I will have next to no chance of connecting on the move.

Only time will tell. When I try it on the road.

Dosen't really matter if no one can use yours, dosen't affect you using others and most of the others will be BT Fon spots with a decent router and WiFi range:banana: Using a Directional antenna I've got BT Fon spots from 1/2 a mile easy.
To get Wifi while actually driving is very unlikely though, did you hope to?

No, I have no intention of using it whilst moving. I am aware of the concept, of park and surf.

As long as you leave it on at home when travelling you should be fine. Fon do occasionally check to see you still have their router connected. As Yeoblade says you will be able to connect on your travels in the UK via BT hotspots. With your phone or laptop make sure you choose the BT with Fon signal, enter username and password when prompted and you will be on line in most places. We used it a lot last week in Devon and Cornwall with no problems even when the signal was weak, obviously the speed wasn't great in those circumstances. Two nights ago in Monmouth we managed 7Mbps much better than home!!

That is good news Val54, my parents live near Monmouth, so hopefully we will get internet on our next visit.
Is there a map of all the FON locations online?

I've not come across a map, but BT have a smartphone app which gives some guidance. It's not perfect because not all BT hotspots are linked to Fon. Better to check what signals you are getting at your destination and used the strongest.

Goodness, just type "FON" in Google and you will get a map of FON hotspots. Can't be easier

No, you just need to buy a Fonera router.
Wooie, the link you provided makes it look like you have to switch to bt, and for some reason (pressure from bt?) it's difficult to find the link to the router from there.

You do not have to switch to BT and i have now changed the link to avoid further confusion.

if you are a BT customer you don't NEED to buy a FON box ...it's built into the BT router !

I'm a BT broadband customer, and have in the past been able to use Fon in France, but not during our recent trip through France to Spain (and return).

It's always been a struggle to find the 'launch' page when you see an SFR Fon wifi signal, but in previous years I've managed to navigate to the BT bit and then successfully connected, but this year I couldn't find that page. Inputting my BT details I just got a report back saying something like password not recognised.

Any ideas ?
