Having problems with flat battery. I have had 3 batteries in 18 months which last a matter of weeks before going flat. Vehicle has been completley electrically tested and electrical test came out with no faults. Is anybody experiencing similar problems or have any ideas? I am thinking of buying a solar panel that connects to the cigarette lighter has anyone tried these?
thanks

Sorry to hear of your problem.
I doubt a small solar panel especially this time of year will do anything to solve this as you have a large drain on the battery .Also you cigarette lighter may not be live untill ignition is on so you can not charge through it.

Find someone with a DC clamp meter. No disconnecting to do ,just clamp it over either the posative or earth lead and read the current. It should be no more than about 0.2 amps.If it is start pulling the habitation fuses & radio fuse untill the reading goes down then you know which circuit is drawing the power.

A battery isolator will be a short term fix untill you sort it.
Recharge battery with a good charger not the van alternator and do not charge if connected to the vehicle over 3-4 amps or you risk damaging the alternator diodes.(this may have already happened, hence your problem)it can be checked.
Anyone who says its O.K. get them to buy you a new alternator if it fails!!! You can get away with it sometimes but it is not good practice, it is designed to generate not to receive .

Good luck

you have a serious problem, i would sort that out rather than messing around with a solar panel.

who tested your electrics????????????????????????????

Our 3a solar dash charger keeps ours topped up BUT there is clearly a drain on your battery that needs sorting, no amount of trickle charge is going to fix it. Take it to another electric tester.

The small plug in type solar panel may just about keep pace with the normal natural discharge but not any load.

If your alternator is faulty you could have it rebuilt if it is low milage rather than exchange which may be a high milage one refurbished/repaired.
A simple voltage output check will NOT shown if there is a drain/leak back through the alternator diodes, this is what may have been checked and said to be a clean bill of health.
Maybe a member near you who knows his arse from his amps can assist for a bottle of something.Don't worry electrics are a male thing, logical, you will find the offending drain . You don't say which battery, leisure or starting.
Any offers of help locally for a bottle of something???

well its pretty obvious something isnt working ok. can you think of anything in common each time you had the problem?
