Hi, I would be most grateful for advice. I have a two burner gas hob (combined sink and cooker unit) Both burners worked fine for the last two years, but I found on using it for the first time this year last week, that the larger burner will not stay on for more than a few seconds. The smaller burner works fine, but of course, everything takes much longer! I wonder if there is anything I can do to rectify this. Many thanks in advance.

its more than likely the flame safety device thats failed ,on some its combined with the piezo igniter .it cuts off the gas supply in case the flame is blown out .

Before replacing any parts or consulting a gas expert, try this procedure,it sometimes works..................

Light the faulty burner, hold it in for a few seconds then release and push in very fast a few times and then release slowly.Do this every time you light the faulty burner. After several times, you should be able to light the burner and release slowly,if that doesn't work then it's revert to plan B.

I had this with one of the burners in my VW, just behind the on off knob there is a small nut that had come loose I tightened it and it then stayed lit problem never occurred again.

If I were a betting man, I am with Annie on this one, I don't think I tis thfsd or thermocouple as often called they tend not to last seconds, the are simple fail. It sounds more like the gas control valve is closing after a few seconds which would indicate a problem with the knob. do check as Annie says also check the fsd has not worked loose and re tighten ....common issue on Glem cookers

When I had a problem with one of my gas burners last year, I asked for advice from the forum and someone suggested inserting a sewing needle into each hole around the burner, and it worked.

My problem was different in that it was caused by spilling milk over the burner, but its a very method that might be worth trying.

Same as campervanannie, but it was the grill, 2 weeks without toast.:(

Many thanks for all your replies. I will try every one of the suggestions, and report back in due course.
Keeping fingers firmly crossed.....

Another potential solution is to hit the knob sharply a few times (e.g. with the edge of your hand). I have had to adopt this solution a couple of times over the last 10 days and hit from both above and the side, just to make sure!

I would say it's the thermo coupler,it is a match size prong and is in a position that it gets heat from the flame and then allows the gas to flow,no heat means no gas so I would say it's broken

WOW - it worked!

Wakk44 :Thank you for this advice ............ it worked a dream. Had to do it just twice, the burner lights again perfectly now. Off for a few days to North Wales now - hoping for better weather.

Pleased it worked for you and thanks for the update, some members come on here, ask questions and we never hear any more from them.Enjoy your break in Wales.

I'm glad it worked. Ours in the Lunar used to play up so I disconnected the spade connectors, then did them up again. Bingo!

Mind you we gave up with the grill on the T4 at the weekend, worked once & then just wouldn't light again, so that's next.

This worked like a dream. Problem solved. Many thanks Antje

Try putting a lighted cigarette lighter or stove lighter to the gas safety cut off for a few seconds before you try to light it to heat it up first it may be just not getting enough heat to override it could be bent after clearing.
