We have just returned from a trip in the van and OH is now looking at doing some modifications. One big thing we would like is a rooflight, for venting and for light. We are complete novices, but Dave is very handy. Has anyone got any tips for what sort to fit (prev posts seem to favour Heki) and also where on the van? As it is a conversion the metal is thin and understand that leaking is the biggest problem. There is a raised area on the roof behind the driving seats which looks ideal as a template to cut out a section, and also would be deeper so fixing would be easier? Will try and post a photo as useless at explaining! Asked Johnscross but they sell them but dont fit them...said we need a bodywork specialist? Any suggestions/advice would be appreciated.

The raised area is 66cm x 37cm which does not seem to correspond to any rooflights I can find. We were quite happy with just a little light.

Hello! Its reasonably easy DIY job to fit a roof light to your van.Measure the cut out size needed onto the roof.Cut out the hole with a jigsaw.Paint the bare cut edges with some antitrust paint. As the roof is only a couple of mm thick a wooden frame is needed on the inside of the opening. The outside part of the rooflight won't fit flush to the roof due to the corrugations,so they will need packing out with something that doesn't rot( I use upvc cut into strips and stuck down with Sika adhesive .A bead of Sika or ribbon mastic under the outside piece of the window , screw the inside and outside pieces of the window together .Theres some pictures on my build blog to give you an idea.

Thanks to all of you! It does look fairly straightforward and Dave seems confident he can do it now. We thought that we would have to get something the size of the raised area but now realise it does not matter so think we will get a 400X400. The Heki one comes with flyscreen /blind which seems very useful so will probably go with that. Next question...with or without "forced ventilation" ??? Have done lots of searches, and saw somewhere that one was suitable for campers and one not...which one! cannot find the link!

does the MPK have a flynet and blind? the link was a bit confusing as one title said inc blind and other does not mention blind!

My one definitely came with a net (ok for mossies, too big for scottish midges) and a blackout blind.

Just got back from the local caravan shop with a new clear domed rooflight for £20! found one in a box which was different to all the others in shop (Heki and MPK) so asked man about it and it was one which was sent in error by MPK and it was a case of "make me an offer for it" even said he would take it back if OH was not happy with it. So got a 400X400 with all the bits...I love a bargain!
