Fitting a new reversing Camera

I have a Fiat 2.8 Swift Kon-Tiki 645 has anyone ever stripped of the rear quarter panel this one goes from roof down to bumper and has the rear light cluster attached. It has one screw fitted in centre under small rear light at top, my current camera cable definitely runs down inside this panel. Sorry if this is not clear but sure if someone has this Swift Kon-Tiki 645 they may well understand the above.

You not in a position to tape the new cable to the old one and pull it through that way?

Hard to know without seeing it. You can also get wireless transmitting cameras?

No sorry to say, current cable is a single end based on mini 6 dim. The new cable has 2 cable ends because new camera is a twin so unable to pull through using old cable.

Will post some pictures in the morning.

Why not simply pick an new, easier route?

I don't have a Kontiki but I put my camera in the back panel (hole saw thro to outside locker) and then cabled up a corner of a unit into a line of high level cupboards that ran all the way from the back to the cab & then under the cab roof lining to the mirror & down the A-pillar to connect to ignition power.

I did consider running the cable under the van along the chassis & into the cab from the engine, but decided that the inside route would be more secure & reliable. I'll bet there are loads of possible routes that don't require you to dismantle an important panel & risk losing waterproofing.

Hi thanks for your info, I am reluctant to drill hole into the rear cabin interior as running cable through cupboards means drilling each cupboard side wall. The outside panel on the back is where the old cable runs but the new cable ends are much larger, the panel looks if it is designed to be removed easily? But hopefully will find someone has done it in the past. I will do it as you suggested if there is no other way.

hi,looking at your pics i agree with "smaug",but if you have to drill all your cupboards,i would look to find a route underneath your wagon.you can follow the loom from the rear to the front,then into the engine compartment,just ty wrap the cable to the loom as you go,i will be getting mine done in the near future,good luck what ever way you go

There is usually a less difficult alternative...

Had a similar problem with fitting my reversing camera, but you should find that if you take both of your din plugs (one for each camera) and pull one of the leads back ~ 3-4" behind the other plug, you can then wrap masking tape around both in their new position (one behind the other) such that the two plugs are in 'line astern' and the whole gubbins is smooth and streamlined. That way both plugs and their associated wires can get pulled through an orifice the ~diameter of one plug, Bingo!

All you need to do now is remove the masking tape and your problem is solved.....(with a bit of luck)

Thank you everyone for your suggestions.
In the end I drilled a hole though outer wall and fitted an external gland to guarantee waterproof entry for cables. Once in the locker out of locker and along behind the curtain pelmet, hide the cable out of sight and saved drilling hole in each locker round the inside.
Took cable into the wardrobe and then down and out under the floor along the outside chassis and into the drivers cab to make all connections.
Really neat job and the twin camera spot on pictures fantastic. So ready to travel again.

Sorry bit late to contribute but I found that the cable in my vehicle had redundant pairs in it particularly as I don't need audio, I purchased a set of 'Y' splitter cables and a short extension for the second camera, fitted them and working fine. Four pin splitter cable set - ReversingcamerasUK

Our Swift had twin cameras but the cable was rubbish and you got a lot of crossover between the two signals. Solution was a 12v relay this provides power to the camera that is in use. When reverse is selected it just switches on the reverse camera. When running normally reverse camera is off. You could do the same thing changing a single camera to a double camera. You just switch the output signal lines from the camera instead using a relay. It also means that you don't have to buy a new screen with twin inputs and you can use the same cable.
