hi i am off up to loch ness stopping at a site there but could do with a spot to wild around glenco/ fort will area off the beaten track for the night in me vauxhall movano lwb maxi roof

Glencoe / FW Wilds

There are lots of lay-bys on A82 in Glencoe, as well as alongside Loch Linnhe further along on A82 between Corran Ferry and FW. Quieter places are down the turn off to Glen Etive just before Glencoe, alongside Loch Leven (turn off A82 at Glencoe village) or at the end of Glen Nevis (turn right off A82 at mini roundabout at north end of FW). Slightly further along there's plenty of room at the Commando Memorial just past Spean Bridge. I've stayed at all of them in a Romahome with no problems.
Good Luck, Rolly

please do not overnight at the commando memorial....there are plenty of places around...do not desecrate the memory of those that fought and died against the tranny of the Nazis for the sake of a free overnight park up.

The best place at Glencoe is the signal rock car park...used to be the old visitor centre...there may be a no overnight sign but it is not enforcable...have used this spot many a time

Thats a bit strong Champstar, did they not fight/believe in freedom???? Why would you desecrate any memory parking in a public carpark? Not that I have ever I may add.

Isn't that the sort of freedom that those brave men fought the nazis to preserve? I have stopped the night at the Varyag memorial in Ayrshire and found it quite a humbling experience to read of their story..... and didn't feel I was desecrating the memories of those sailors in any way.

sorry if people think it is a bit strong but there are so many places around this area of Scotland to wild I dont see how a popular memorial can be an ideal wild spot. There are very often wreaths and crosses with poppies laid there.
I wont park at a place of memorial out of a mark of respect...I will visit them and pay respect.

Yes freedom is what these brave souls fought for but is it really the freedom we desire to overnight in such places...even if the motorhomer is of the respectable wild camping family.

All I ask is find another spot close by...such as Loch Oich only a couple of miles further on

My dad was actually one of those brave WW2 commandos who did his training at Achnacarry, just north of the present memorial. He was one of the fortunate ones who managed to survive the war, although of course the memorial is dedicated to those of his comrades who weren't so lucky.

I haven't been up there since the big new parking area was built, but I am hoping to visit again later this year, and will place a wreath, which will also be in memory of my dad who we sadly lost four years ago.

To be honest, part of me thinks it would be disrespectful for me to sleep in the car park of a memorial dedicated to such great men, while another part thinks that in a strange way I would be welcome there, as if visiting old family friends. I will wait until I get there, and see how I feel. As mentioned, there are plenty of other good wilding spots in the area.

Incidentally, it was more than forty years after the war before my dad re-visited the area, when I took him and my mum back up there for the first time. The Achnacarry estate is the clan base of the Camerons, and we were granted the freedom to roam over all the old training areas where they perfected their death slides, rope-bridge building, close-quarter combat etc. There was (maybe still is) one of their old landing craft abandoned in Loch Arkaig, where they used to practice their landings under fire. There were also a few remaining nissen huts, where the commandos were billeted.

On a later visit, we found they had built a museum to the Clan Cameron, with a small corner dedicated to the WW2 commandos, with boxes of old photo's etc. To say that these visits were a little emotional for my dad and us would be a slight understatement.

If you do visit, whether you decide to stay or not, please treat the place with the respect that it deserves. I'm sure that there will be the spirits of some very very brave men looking down on you.

You don't need to park AT the Memorial. There's a small section of disused road just behind it where I have stayed without desecrating anybody's memory. It also has a great view of Aonach Mor and the Ben, if the cloud allows.

My dear freind, Jim, who sadly passed away in September, was a recovery driver based in Inverness, he passed the memorial all the time, i once asked him about staying there and he said it was very much frowned upon by the locals,

Why has this thread turned into a discussion about the memorial, the location was not even mentioned by the original poster? There are loads of WC locations in the Highlands, far more suitable than a carpark.

There is considerable local feeling about staying overnight at the Commando monument, sadly stoked up by an unsubstantiated claim which was aired in the local Press and at a local Community Council meeting that "someone" had seen a motorhome owner emptying a chemical toilet near the monument.
Good spot overlooking Loch Linnhe but height barriers restrict access

thats what happens, quite often, i always get my threads hijacked, but i dont think its an issue, is it? its good to have a discussion about diverse issues, thats how we learn new things, dont we?

stay at the ben nevis ski resort, just a couple of miles north of fort william on the inverness road...drive up to the main car park where the ski lifts are and park there...i've stayed there several times,,it says no overnighting, but it isnt a problem,i asked at the ski lifts a couple of years ago and was told to park up down at the bottom end of the car park and no-one would bother me,,the signs are there to put people off so the area doesnt turn into a caravan site....we stayed there in february and they even let me fill the onboard water tanks from the hose pipes at the rear of the ski centre.......there you go sorted!!!!
if you look at the bottom of the car park you'll see a high zip wire ride and some climbing frames, get parked up there near the pile of logs.

my post was just to give more information about the memorial some of us might have wish to know more and without seeing it just happened to be something that i watched very recently

Simple...... Someone suggested the memorial car park as a possible stopover, someone else later politely gave their opinion that in their view it would be wrong to use it for that purpose.

We are all entitled to share our views on any subject, though we don't ask everyone else to agree or take notice.

You will find there are very recent commemorations at the memorial as it is effectively the Special Forces memorial of GB.

It wouldn't cross my mind to camp there.
