May I ask a question ? I note that at the side of most tesco petrol stations is the free "Air and Water" top up bay. Can anyone confirm if it's ok to drink this water?
Thanks.

hi. i think thats too hard for anyone on here to answer with any certainty. it might not be mains water .could be rain water caught from the roof etc. try asking in the service station. they may also have a potable water tap that they will let you use to be safe.
i have used garage taps myself but very often ask first.
harvesting rain water these days is being done to supply toilets etc then the garage etc arent charged for importing the water or the sewage charge for export. same as a household on a water meter. i harvest rain water to cut water bills makes a big differance .
ask first play it safe.

At my Tesco on the pay pillar there is air and screen wash.

There is also a tap with water and it says "do not drink"

When you operate the tap it is obviously under mains pressure. My guess is that they put the "do not drink" sign on just to cover themselves. If it comes from the mains it should be OK. In any case I put purification tabs in mine as it may stand around a while before use.

Anyway, assumptions you make about mains water are obviously at your own risk, but often supermarkets put on these kind of warnings to cover themselves in these days of stupid litigation claims. A classic example would be "Recipe does not contain nuts but cannot guarantee nut free as equipment used to prepare food previously which may have contained nuts... yada yada"

That's just nuts!

I once tried getting water from a water and air docking area the water came out brown and stinking, never again. Plus the fact that the water sits in a rubber hose of indeterminate length on a coil, bring on the legionnaires:tongue:

think legionaires is caught by breathing the germs not drinking them .

Car wash !

We look out for garages or supermarkets with a busy car wash attached......if the water usage is high and high pressure then it must be a) coming off the mains, and b) not being held for long in a storage tank. Both should pretty well guarantee the water is fit to drink. This even works in France!

if you get water from any unsure source boil it x2 just to make sure.

how long you boil if for is a find lord lucan answer.

Look for car washes

We have never had any problems by looking out for garages or supermarkets with a busy car wash attached. This guarantees that a)the high pressure and volume must mean its coming off the mains, and b) the regular use means water is never held for very long in a holding tank. so should be fit to drink....even on the continent.

another source for water is allotments, they usually have taps in a central location,

and it will be drinkable as thye usually have to pay for it.

Water water everywhere!

As has been pointed out on another post, churches and graveyards usually have taps for watering flowers and as a sailor I head for harbours and marinas they always have taps if you can get in. I carry a key that fits the square top of a tap spindle cos many in public places have the Tee top removed to keep us out.

Small adjustable works well too, sometimes they do this in public loos to stop some idiot flooding the place.

Anyone just tried knocking on the door if there's a MH in the driveway??

i have knocked on doors many a time .just have a say 10 litre plastic bottle . works in any country . i have advised this before on several threads . never been turned down.

Legionaires is caught from fine mist of water like in showers. You can drink the water with no ill effect. This was pointed out with the current Edinburgh outbreak.
