Finally Decided Scotland not France

We have been trying to decide what to do in April. We have moved the ferry booking to France a number of times and they won't let us move it again. So we sat down and pondered whether we really wanted to go. We need holiday / medical insurance, dog needs AHC, return ferry needs booking, visit to vet to get back, everytime you read the news something has changed so we have decided on Scotland before the midges and head for Orkney. Booked a CL for a week and will have a wander up the West Coast. Should be good fun and we don't have to worry about speaking French 😉

Sounds like a plan.
If you are wanting to avoid the natives with kids, remember to check the Scottish school holiday times - they are different to English ones.

School summer term starts on 18th April so we will only have a couple of days overlap. Not thought of that though. Thanks for the reminder.

Next job is to locate all the RNLI stations on the way. There are 238 of them in the UK and Ireland and we have found 89 of them so far. Been to some places that you would never think of going to.
Don’t forget the Lifeboat Station on Loch Ness. 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿👌

I have a similar dilemma to your OP, QFour, but we are all booked with dog friendly cabins and I think we will go. Over the years we have travelled and worked in Europe but are relatively new to motorhoming and (confession time) have yet to use any French Aires. Covid hasn't helped, of course.

Like you we plan to visit the Orkneys after, maybe even Shetland.

We will have to look for it on the way back. Just found out there are two on Orkney and one on one of the islands so looks like a foot ferry for that one. Its just a bit of fun really but we have found some nice places on our travels

Unsung hero’s. My mum used to collect for the lifeboats every year when I was a kid.

If you want a really out of the way lifeboat station try Kirkcudbright (Dumfries & Galloway) Lifeboat station. It’s located about 3 miles along a forest track on the shores of Kirkcudbright Bay. The general public can only reach it by either walking or cycling from the barrier at the start of the track. Well worth a trip and there is quite a nice overnight spot on the approach road to the forestry track right on the waters edge.

C'est une super idée, pareil pour nous aussi !

The RNLI don't seem to know about that one; they only show one on the edge of the town. When you search Google Maps for RNLI Kirkcudbright, they show that one - RXQ3+R2 Kirkcudbright - plus another that's a private house! After moving the map around a bit, I assume that it's at QWVQ+V2 Kirkcudbright.

Best I can place it is at RW2V+GV9 or thereabouts. Because the station is so far out they meet in the town and take a land rover out to the station. To find it take the A711 south out of town and when the main road bears left take the right fork along the small coast road (several overnight spots along here). The forestry track to the RNLI station takes off to the right about 3 miles along this coast road.

I am doing the same early April; do I need to book a ferry in advance? I thought of booking a ferry when I am up there, as I am no sailor, and I could try and choose a calmer day, the same on return, being I have not been before which is the better crossing to use, I am searching on here for itinerary if anyone has one.
