So after a busy 24 and troublesome handover to 25 we have finally cut 10-12 full days free. We are heading south in the Delaware from Oban and looking for stops Cornwall, Devon or Salisbury with access to town if possible and local historical interest. Just if anyone has any MH sites or stops they can recommend. We have looked at the location maps and they are great but we are thinking 2 -3 nights somewhere to take in what's going on. Oh and leaving on the 10th..this Monday...thanks in advance.

Salisbury has a nice c&cc site next to where the castle was. Also a big hillfort just a few miles away and very good museum. Close to Stonehenge too.
What sort of historical and is it soon?

This time of year I think you can stop on the front at Woolacombe and possibly Marine drive there but your not supposed to I dont think but nobody cares. Salcombe is my favourite place in Devon but we tend to stay on off grid CL's. None of which will be any good this time of year.

We did a winter trip to Devon and Cornwall many years ago in and found most of the Devon touristy villages and towns were like Ghost towns. Cornwall had more going on. I think its more of a working place than Devon which is full of holiday and second homes.

When you say ‘historical interest’ do you mean like national trust stuff, Cornwall is pretty much closed till Easter
So's Scotland Guerdeval and especially Oban..so any historical interest really to pass the time investigating. Not looking for 'nightlife' folks...just a change, somewhere to hang out thats different . Just need shops..a touring site would be nice or wild spots, we are pretty easy going about expectations.

Thanks Barry, don't mind ghost town..just maybe a good C+C site near town.

Sounds good with SH etc but not looking for a c+cc site specifically Debs..but thank you will have a look.

.I know it ‘sounds’ like a long. Diversion but if you stop off at York I reckon it would only add 20/30 miles to the journey and there’s an (expensive) CC right in the town that is if you plan to break the journey then Bristol is a nice and historic again with a pricey site right in town but tbh if you’re spending hundreds just on fuel why not stay on city centre sites.

If you are looking for a wild camping nightstop near Salisbury the car park at Wilton is good N 51.080828, W 1.859623. Wilton House nearby is worth a visit. If you use bicycles there is a quiet road route south of the A36 through Quidhampton that takes you into Salisbury.

What are you driving because devon and cornwall can be troublesome down the lanes, especially in winter. A lot of campsites will be shut so I'd try pitchup or similar to plan. There are very few MH parkups, sadly, but Tintagel has the perfect spot. Tarmac, laid out for MHs. Day costs £5, overnight costs £5, toilets are 50p. This is always rammed in the summer, but should be OK in February. I live on Exmoor, on the Somerset/Devon border and to be honest don't travel much in the southwest (7.5m coachbuilt), it's too much hassle. We like Appledore (northern burrows, day only), and Stoke Perrow on the river dart (campsite, closed in winter). Both beautiful places. Good luck

We are 8m and find modern city centres troublesome so will try to avoid, York may be possible but was thinking on the return trip and Bristol I know quite well so....maybe.

Wells in Somerset has a car park that allows motorhomes to stop over. In the town centre and walking distance to the cathedral. Address is Market Street.

Thanks Martin, we are 8m a Delaware so tempting as it is we might skip these gems ...Tintagel sounds perfect, will note for the future. Aiming for Salisbury to start so will have a poke about the 'net' to see what's available..

I can confirm that the CCC site in Salisbury is in a quite pleasant location on the northern edge of the city and has a good reputation (we haven't stayed there of course as we only live a mile away!). I wouldn't recommend trying to park the van in the city centre, the main central car park has been turned into a battleground by the council.
I don't know about the emissions category of your van, but be aware that Bristol and Bath both have ridiculous LEZs to catch out the unwary, I would recommend reading up on those.

That campsite is on a bus route to town centre.

Perfect, we have booked 3 nights while we consider our next stop.

I might be missing something, but have you looked on Search For Sites. It will show you almost every single spot available, from a car park to a full blown all singing all dancing site. All on a map with reviews, photos, notes, costs, restrictions etc.

My favourite site too. Very comprehensive . It includes cc and c&cc sites too. Even better it works smoothly and doesn't freeze or buffer when moving the map!

Your missing nothing Roly maybe only just that I have looked, and its all very comprehensive except though for access and egress..we are a tad over 8m and while used to times of year here up here and the traffic and also having local knowledge I just put it out here for feed back as we are heading into different territory...and I know I may cause carnage being quite 'long' tis all...I believe its what the site is for, thanks all.
