Fiamma / Omnistore type wind out awnings, are they any good in bad weather ?

My campervan has a Fiamma F45 on it (I don't have or want sides)

Pretty much in line with what others have said about wind - except up to a point that applies to any large sail-like device.

I use Dog Tethers (the large chrome corkscrew type things) to anchor mine to the ground using luggage straps around th e top of the leg supports set out at an angle, and then wind the awning back in a bit to maintain tension on the awning fabric.

That works pretty well if its breezy or there's a light wind. I wouldn't use it if it was blowing hard as its clearly a bad idea - but then that would apply to other things with a big flexible 'sail-like' area like Gazebo's or even Drive-away awnings (ok once assembled and pegged, but you'd not want to put on up in a strong wind).

I don't use mine loads - but its nice for shade and for shelter in inclement weather where suitably parked up (I've generally used mine when in a field parked up to partcipate in a mountain biking event for a weekend). When Mountain Biking its good to work on the bike under it, and gives an extra space other than the van to utilise for sitting or eating.

We have had our 4.5 metre F45 awning with a custom 3 metre safari room and an extra end to create a cooking shelter out iinthe Algarve all winter. We had it properly tied down and though it can be a bit noisy in the wind no problems all winter and we werenot the only ones doing that.

Our coachbuilt came with a Fiamma. I never presumed it was anything other than a sun shade. In 18 months we've never even wound it out.

Am I bovvered? ??

If its raining but not windy, and we are parked up I sometimes wind the awning out about a foot, and dont use the legs. It acts as a porch then so you can have the side door open and keep everything dry.
