Ferry to callais .

Been looking at the cost of a crossing to france.Eurotunnel is twice as much as ferry .As I dont know how long I will be over is it best to book one way on ferry and the return when ready or can you book an open return?
 
You can book an open return but it is expensive. We always book a single as we are never sure what day we return so when we are getting close to Calais we go online and book a single to get home. It works for us.
 
I just book one way and rock up to the terminal when I arrive back north. It's less stressful. Seniors get 20% discount at Dieppe, but not if you book online.

I only get a one way ticket as i travel for about three months and after spending time checking the best price and ferry time to get a good deal I still go back and use Camping and Caravan club as they are always 10% cheaper and i have found that if I call them when i get near to the return port i always get a reasonable price, but with some of the problems at Calais now i have started to use the tunnel more and that means i don't have to camp out in Dover a real run down dump.If you want to look around for better deals at bad times or Tesco ticket deals you will find it cheaper but the way i look at it now is the price i pay for a fast crossing on the train in 35 minutes costs me about one fill up of Diesel on my van and the cost is a very small cost of the overall trip.I tend to spend €750.00 on diesel and about 5,000 miles per trip plus the cost of camp sites Aires food etc so £85-£90 on the tunnel seems good value to me.good luck.

Was looking at the prices because we're thinking of going in August, £185 return train and the ferry was £30 cheaper, I thought those prices were ok or have I got it wrong ?
 
7.5m van, 2 adults, 0 kids, 0 pets paid £52.80 one way back in April.

Just booked return crossing for next week with same details and paid £54.

Both crossings at sensible o'clock and booked individually online with P&O Ferries.

That's about right I would say. Oh, and P&O have far better ships than DFDS.
 
book on arrival

hello kris............your best bet for the cheapest ticket is to turn up at the booking desk (either way), P&O and DFDS in the dover terminal, and I believe free parking at all booking places, and ask for the cheapest crossing they can give you in the next few days. Tell them you are ok for the middle of the night (usually cheapest) etc. Usually they offer one that very night just so many hours later. Theres free parking for MHs at the far end of the sea front Dover. If they don't quote around £50 or less, keep on haggling. When returning make sure that the French booking clerk gets the time and date correct that you want.......they can be a bit dopey.........good luck.....steve bristol
 
Unfortunately haggling didn't work a couple of years ago when I wanted to go back. I ended up paying well over the odds to get on one the next day - they wouldn't entertain any price reductions apart from it was stupid money to get on immediately. It was still about £123 for next day. I will be booking online for a one way ticket back. The £20 meal deal sounds good. Thanks Tezza. Has anyone book this time with the meal voucher. Says promotion is on outward journey but when going to confirm booking there is nothing about it.

Last year we had the voucher for food, they handed it over when you are at Dover. My husband is a fish and chip addict. Don't on any account have it, never eaten anything so terrible even for free it wasn't worth eating
 
We had a breakfast last September which was ok so we will probably stick to that.
