Favorite childhood toy

Toys? Toys? You were lucky to have toys - all we had were the unexploded bombs thoughtfully provided by that nice man Hitler and the dead mice provided by next door's cat......

Seriously, though, it has to be Meccano.

Hi JH, Is that the way Meccano is spelt? Thanks. I spelt it the German way. ☺☺☺

I grew up on a farm and spent most of my time playing on old bikes, building huts with bales, and making kairties out of any old bits lying around. We also had had horses and donkeys which we rode and fell off a lot, but I don't think you could call them toys! But my all time favourite toy was Elizabeth, my baby sized doll who was bathed and changed and taken for thousands of walks around the farm from when I was 2 years old till I was in secondary school. Alas, her plastic legs grew brittle and snapped off leaving sharp edges and she was sadly laid to rest.

I can't remember having a favorite toy, but i'm sure i did at the time. Most i can remember of my childhood was in the woods over my back garden, making fires, tents, tarzan swings and once finding the door open to the cellar in the working men's club and sampling the bottles of beer, then getting dun of PC Plod lol, argh, those were the days.

Nothing changes does it Jen:):)

My favourite toys were my dollies, I used to take so many to bed with me there was hardly room for me. Elizabeth Ann was my favourite but there was Susanne and big Jenny and the baby dolls and the Swiss doll and several others. My Mum used to knit clothes for them from patterns in the Womans Weekly. It's no wonder that I grew up to have four children!
I remember one of my boys having a yellow chopper bike. I also remember when we got a Vic20 computer for one of the younger ones and we all spent ages programming in easy games. He would press run before we'd saved it and the blessed thing would crash and lose all the hours of typing it in!

But did you ever use a guessing stick?? (Slide Rule) and Log Tables.

I college there were mechanical computational devices, comptometers they were called, you had to be trained and certificated to use one!!

Comptometer - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

In Plessey Telecomms, we had a prototype Valve (Vacuum Tube) controlled phone system, the heat was phenomenal!!

Then came the transistor!!! At the time the definition of a transistor was:

"The fastest fuse on three legs!":D

Still love valve equipment and enjoy repairing old radios and equipment.
got nice home brew amp not valve been in loft for years built it long time ago

Damn 303's Used them on the range for practice. Gave my shoulder a judder on the first shot. Got used to them.

Used to go with my uncle to a MOD rifle range near Sheffield. He fired 303's and let me have a go sometimes, Yes, they do give a kick!!

Mostly helped in the butts with the targets. At that time, mid 60's there was a Woman who was using a Russian 22 Rifle, when zeroed in, was hitting the target at about a mile.

I remember trying out handguns and the difference between the standard Army issue and a Luger was remarkable, big thick steel shed for that one.

For fun, they'd fire at the earth at the top of the butts and shower you, buggers!! All good fun

(It's remarkable the difference in generations, Phil with his computers as fond memories and others with weapons!!)

i used to have a grifter bike my pride and joy used to put pegs and cardboard on spokes to make noise went everywhere on it till some toe rag nicked it from outside sweet shop never found it cried for days :mad1:

I had a pop gun with a cork on a string in the early 1950s then moved on to a 177 diana then a 22 original air rifle. I could never afford the airsporter that I wanted.
I also carried a knife as did most of my friends. Either i'm losing my memory or knives and guns wern't linked to juvenile crime.

I was firing 202s, 303s, Bren gun Sten gun GPMG and SLR self loading rifle, from 1961 - 1966 aged 11- 16. You had to be 13 to join the army cadets but I lied told them I was 13 but only 11years old. I got my marksmans badge when I was about 12years old, but I still couldn't go shooting wildlife as I'm an animal lover.

Can't say I had a favourite toy. I used to have lots of dinky toys, then an electric train set. This was in the 1950s!

I had one of those gat air pistols, tried to shoot a pigeon one day, it shook it feathers and the pellet fell to the floor.
