I was worried about this too. Without wanting to sound harsh, surely the man has insurance for this?

Not sure you can get insurance for an engine swap or big repair, more so on one that old.

Think its more getting them put up somewhere safe, hotel b&b etc not the g box that has died, that can be sorted when he gets the van back home or repaired where he is, a used box im sure could be found there, meen time they require a home of sorts.

on the day could be any of us breakdown insurance will take the cheapest option sent me home 12 years ago on a low loader rather than pay for a head gasket car hire included once they get you back to a garage the repair costs are down to you ,

My 2 big worries over the years we "full-timed" in the summer were
Health and a major problem with the vehicle.
As with the OP we had no home to go to in UK If I or Nida or the motorhome were out of action.
