Hi all, just a quick hello from a new member. Me and the Mrs. Have just bought our first motorhome, an Autotrail 634 Apache.
We are also into motorcycles and have traveled all over Europe on them.
On a trip to Faro last year on the Yam FJR1300, I found myself looking at the folks in the motorhomes that we're pulling into the free stopovers we were using and thinking.. After 30 odd years of mainly sleeping rough and riding motorcycles I really fancy trying the easy life. We are not getting any younger and crawling out of a bivvy or, if I wasn't too knackered to put it up, a tent, just seemed to be getting harder each year. We won't pack the bikes in but the touring is going to be in the MH from now on :)

We have done a few trips in it so far but nothing too long distance, Jedburgh, Keilder, Scremerston, Whitby etc. We prefer to wild camp as we have everything we need, the van has gaslow and a 100w solar panel.

This weekend we are off to the blue john cavern in Derbyshire and will hopefully find somewhere to park up for a day or two.

Any advice and tips are always welcome :)

Cheers
Jim

Be Carefull

Howdo

I used to have a Honda XBR500 and quite happily toured the UK with just a tank bag and throw over panniers with my tent strapped to the pillion seat. Now I am married and as well as every possible usable space in my Mercedes Vito I also need to tow a 6'X4'X4' van trailer to cart every possible type of clothing, just in case!!!!

Welcome to the forum

Hi and wellcome.

Great forum, lots of help when you need it.

Funny,

Seems a lot on here are motorcyclists or ex-motorcyclists.

Must be the whole travelling and lifestyle kinda thing... there are similarities (just slower and less general mucking about in my case!).

I'm one of many who still runs a bike and I've had my humble LDV Campervan for over a year now and have to say I do like being able to just roll off somewhere and have a base and all the essentials to hand, and a cuppa only a stove's reach away. Just wish I could do more of it. Its also nice to be able to chuck my Mtb in the back and go off trail riding, with somewhere to get a brew and change and maybe overnight as well - all in the one vehicle.

Touring on the m-bike you don't tend to be hooning, but enjoying the area you're riding through... so its not all that different touring in the van to on the bike really I find.

Plus the other half really, REALLY doesn't like tenting it :lol-053:

Hi and welcome to the forum, just been up your neck of the woods, North Yorks, had a brilliant couple of days. You wont have any problems finding anywhere by the Blue John caverns, one of my favourite places, threw my dad off Mam Tor, (well his ashes), say hello for me.:raofl:

Hi Jim,
Welcome to the forum.
I read your intro with a smile, thanks for reminding me why I bought a motorhome (autotrail like you).

I agree with GXWXJR there seems to be a link between motorcycles and motorhoming.. all a lifestyle thing.

On the basis it take longer to get back from work than too it on buses at the moment I have proposed a nother motorcycle to swmbo, I quite fancy a fazer 1000, reality is probably a vintage honda c50......but downhill can still attract flies on your teeth ( well could if I had any )

Have ridden one of the first generation Fazer 1000,s quite a lot... great all rounder with plenty of prod. I never took to the styling much, but cant fault the bike And a proper wolf in sheeps clothing if you wanted it to be ( I shan't invite trouble elaborating ). Makes a great tourer too.

Got a soft spot for the c50, 70, 90 cub too. Mind you.... have you seen the money they fetch now? A cheap runabout they arent so much any more.... but a 90 is a great choice for runnjng about and would make a bettef job of being the kit to cart on a motorhome than just about any small wheel scooter imo.

Eyup - northerners taking to the road

Where's the emoticon that says northerner. We've just bought a 10 year old tribby - its our first campervan. Its got everything we need except a really comfy place for the dog to sleep! We're on intensive training at the moment - how to fill, empty, replace and so on but hoping to head off somewhere near-ish soon. So many great places to see. Any tips on anything - tribby's, camp sites etc, greatly appreciated

Thanks for all the welcomes :) we had a cracking time this weekend. We met up with Jennyanydots and hubby Martin in their 'Dilly bus' and nearly got blown off the top of Mam Tor! (Martin lost his yat) :) We had to go down to Morrisons car park in Capel-le-frith at about 1am as it was just too windy in the car park at Mam Tor. We stopped in the pub carpark in Hope the second night and we found a good spot on Sunday night at the foot of Ladybower reservoir. The view in the morning from the top of hill was stunning...
