Evening friends.

We want yo get one of those expanding hose pipes for filling up our water, but there's so many to choose from and a lot with poor reviews. Anyone using one of these and can you recommend one that will last more than a few uses without leaking?

Thanks Colin. 🙂👍

The flat food grade ones are brilliant.

I happened to get chatting to a seasoned motorhomer on an Aire in Ireland earlier this year when I spotted him using one.

It had been a game changer for him, and it now is for us. He’d tried various different types of hose over the years, including the “expandable” type.

He demonstrated his, including an extra fitting he’d bought which fits into the water filler into the Moho tank which prevented overspill etc. I didn’t bother getting that, but the food grade 10 metre hose which came on a reel with tap fittings and a nozzle definitely fits the bill perfectly for us and stows away easily into our (fairly small) external locker 👍

I never use Amazon, but there are plenty of them listed on eBay.

Thanks for that. You don't happen to have a link or name to the one you've got by any chance? I prefer to buy items that have been tried and tested 😁👍

I think that completely draining the expanding hoses is a difficult task, resulting in water coming out wherever you store it in the vehicle, as well as water being left in it stagnating
We use the roll flat hose and then chuck it in the shower [with 1/2 the van contents ...] inside a spare 9 litre washing up bowl to gather up any residual water. Works fine

I have had several of the expanding hose pipes, most of which haven’t lasted long before bursting,
But I have two of the Hozelock expanding hose pipes one in the motorhome, and one at home for washing the vehicles with, both are well over 6 or 7 years old, and still going strong

I've always used an ordinary hose, although I have limited storage space so one of those flat hoses that store on the reel might be an idea

I had a flat hose on a reel for many years and swapped to a flat hose without a reel about 20 years ago.
Far better
The ones on the reel take up far more space than those without / they take longer to store the hose / they cost more.

This is the exact item and seller I used on eBay.

Also noticed the price has gone up a lot since June! 🫤
I paid £29.95, it’s now £44.

Unfortunately that’s the way it seems to be in the world nowadays - rampant inflation 😝🙁🤷‍♀️

I have 2 x Expandable XHoses and have been using them for several years without any problems. Previously I had cheap expandable hoses and they very quickly burst. XHose easy to use, easy to store, reliable, very light but more expensive.

I only worry about food grade when water is being stored or held, not when it briefly passes through a hose. The water is not in the hose long enough for the plasticisers to leach out. The hose empties itself when it contracts but I flush fresh water through it before filling my tank to make sure that there is no residual contamination. Leaching of plasticisers is a slow process not an instant poisoning.

Wow, that does seem a lot compared to the r4dent's earlier link. I was going to be tempted as you mentioned the reel, but not at that price I'm afraid.
We had flat hose with the stupid Whale fitting that we had to use for the Bailey. I made a bag for it and it stored away a treat without unravelling.
