Exmouth Sea Front Motorhome Ban

To get back on subject - I've spoken to E Devon and Devon County council and they have sent me a list of the restrictions and associated maps. They are in 'Word' format and if anyone is interested, pm me an email address and I'll send you a copy.

I think you should give us a general break down lol

Reet:-

The ones that will affect us most are

The road that runs parallel to the beach up to the lifeboat station - complete ban

Lifeboat station to the red cliffs - 8pm to 8am ban

There are three car parks now available for up to 3 consecutive nights I don't know the cost.

Here's the map,(you'll have to click on it) but don't know if the detail is good enough:-

Ignore the message where I asked if you knew the costs Chris haha

Neil, £11 for 24hrs was mentioned by Councillor Bill Nash, but whether that is the true cost I don't know. Next time I'm in Exmouth I'll have a look

We stayed on the seafront last year for 1 night and we were parked next to some locals who were parked for the week looking on the internet the complaints have mainly been about grey waste flowing from vans there has also been one complaint about a generator
The only thing that concerned me was if one of the boy racers lost control and wiped the van out

perspective

OK, I think some perspective is needed. Firstly there have been some gross abuses of the parking, tables and chairs blocking the cycle path, grey waste and cassettes being emptied in the toilets. This is by a minority but it is what is noticed. The efforts by the council are to create "aires" type overnight places. The parking ban on motorhomes is overnight so you can still park along the sea front in the day to enjoy the beach etc. In honesty I would have thought they would ban parking in the day but allow overnight.

I cycle along the sea front most mornings, most rubbish is left by the "youfs" not the campers, most campers are sensible but those that abuse the "overnight parking" and try to make it a "camp site" cause the problem. This morning there was a rented van parked on the pavement at the end of queens Drive with a tent on the pavement! they were not camper vanners but they will be used as an example.

I really think that the attempt by the council to create a balance between the ability to park and sleep overnight and stopping the area being overused should be given a chance.

Of course many will not wish to pay but if it had not become so popular (40 campers counted the other morning) perhaps it would have remained unchanged.....

I visit Exmouth a lot by car and camper and agree about the 'abuses' by a few and also that daytime banning with overnight parking would seem more logical.
The details I received from DCC make me think there is a total ban on the seafront to the west of the lifeboat station, can you confirm this on your next cycle ride please?

tidewatcher has nailed it as far as I'm concerned.

We were gonna head down on weekend. Does anyone know if the new car parks are up and running yet ? We were hoping the ban wouldn't be enforced until they'd made at least parking provisions for larger vehicles in the designated car parks.

Guess there's always the coach park behind station if we're stuck but don't want to inflame things further.

There's some interesting stuff here:

Exmouth seafront camper van and motorhome ban comes into place very soon - Devon Live

“The recommendation to approve the traffic regulation order had come despite objections from residents and visitors that small vans and motorhomes are being penalised where in many cases they are no larger than multi-purpose vehicles or 4x4s, a minority of inconsiderate motorhome users have caused the issue and that a blanket ban is an exaggerated response to a few complaints.”

“,,,70 new overnight camper van bays would be created in council-owned car parks – 30 in the Queen’s Drive Echelon car park, 20 in the Imperial Recreation Ground and 20 in Maer Road. “

“Camper vans and motorhomes are still very welcome to stay in Exmouth for up to three consecutive nights (subject to terms and conditions) for just £11 for 24 hours (exactly the same tariff that they have been used to paying on the street). From Monday, July 2, they will be able to stay in our Imperial Recreation Ground car park and for smaller campervans, typically the popular VW campervans, there is also an opportunity to stay in Queens Drive Echelon car park. We will also be offering the same overnight parking offer in Maer Road car park as soon as we have been able to complete the works necessary to create an upgraded entrance. “

“After a trial period of twelve months, should the parking after 8pm be taken up strongly within all designated car parks, I would urge the committee to assess the need for extra services such as electric points and foul waste facilities for users.”

So 70 spaces in aire type locations with the prospect of further services to be added later.

Interestingly this is not all that different from one of the options to be considered by Wirrall council for New Brighton about now. I'd like to see all councils providing permitted overnight parking places.

I know that any loss is a loss but this is a move towards the continental system and I don't have to like the ban – but I do like the 70 spaces being provided. I don't see the charging as being too high either. I'd rather go somewhere where I know there will be permitted parking than have to mooch about looking for a place. I don't like the three day limit but there are three locations so I suppose you could move form one to antoher.

This will be more likely to make me want to visit Exmouth than deter me.

I think it will all depend on the location of the car parks as if they are surrounded by walls and buildings etc ,with no views then I certainly won't be bothering.
Although I can't say that I would rush back to Exmouth anyway !

These locations seem pretty good. Two seafront locations? And the third not far off.

It all seems a bit too good to be true so I'll be very interested in comments once people have started using Exnmouth's aires.

Edit: On reflection - all three are seafront locations

Your second picture is of the lorry park, not one of the three sites quoted

Yes, you're right. I don't know how that crept in. I usually blame my age. This is the Maer road location

All three seem pretty good to me. I took the locations straight off searches on Google Maps.

Edit - paragraph deleted - my fairlure to read Sasquatsh correctly.

There is an article in Devonlive stating the council hopes to net £50,000 from this scheme - a bit optimistic from Moho owners I have spoken to.

I have just read the link. Having first read the posts on here it seems most people were unhappy about how the Council has handled the situation. I can understand that if one has been staying on the seafront with a sea view then the move to a car park is disappointing. - However, the Council is talking about EHU’s and water if the carparks are used properly by motorhomers. Surely this is ‘progress’ in a way?

They were in a no win situation and providing spaces in car parks is good, but the reasoning to allow daytime parking, when others could be affected, and ban night time parking, when there are few folk there, seems illogical to me.

Possibly because a few were using it for long term stays, and from a locals point of view, one white box is much like another, so they wouldn't differentiate, between the two. As far as they are concerned, they pay their council tax and expect to have easy access to the beach to walk their dogs, saw and heard them in Whitby. Probably won't be Long till mohomes are banned during the day too.

I was on Queens Drive in the car two weeks ago. 37 vans, several with chairs and tables on the pavement and one guy with his back end taking over most of the pavement and his table and chairs taking up the next space. Several cars drove off because they couldn't park.
