Exhaust valve

All egr valves are different here is one I believe is off a 2008 x250 base van not mine I read about it on an autosleeper forum dealer price £600 I think the owner found one for £300. Apparently water runs off the scuttle into it and seizes it up.

My 2.2 fiat 2007 van started having egr problems at 20000 mls I was advised by a German I met to disconnect the wires connected to it when the engine was running OK. He actually did this for me assuring me all would be Ok and showing me the disconnected wires on his van. My problems stopped from then and 17000 mls later engine still running And no problems with eml light.

Thanks guys yes it's the EGR valve if I can find someone to renew it for around £100 well worth while for peace of mind , it's a Ducato 2007 2.3 only done 40,000 problem may be when I bought it at 4 years old it had only done 10,000 and most diesels do like to work .

You probably just need a clean up to the EGR , de coke throttle body ,

an egr valve only works on start up for a limited time it reintroduces exhaust gasses into the inlet manifold to enable a quick warm up of the engine and helps with emissions, if your egr valve is clogged with carbon it will stick and under certain conditions will make the engine cut out,
i havnt heard about using oven cleaner before but a litre of meths from homebase works wonders, remove egr valve pour meths into bucket throw in the egr and leave overnight keep some meths back for a bit of rinsing the following day before refitting, 95% of egr valves will turn by 120 degrees to internally block off this also keeps the electronics connected so ecu is fooled into correct emission status, so if you are stuck in middle of knowwhere and need to sort it out undo the mounting bolts turn it through 120degrees and using one bolt refit. Cheers andy

Unfortunately my problem with EGR valve occur when the engine is well heated up, so should I be looking elsewhere?

Again this has been a great post

I believe the EGR is not only used during warm up, it's a constant working device. My car is currently in the garage for some power loss problems and they tested the EGR with an external device to make sure it works.

Yes i think they open and close quite a bit under different driving conditions i know on my vw lt when i hook it up to my computer it shows its duty cycle. I stripped mine down and cleaned it all and the inlet manifold last month when doing my timing belts also blocked it off at the exhaust manifold. Has been ok no warning lights as mine is vacuum operated. Here is a picture of my valve and inlet at 30k miles not too bad but still a lot of sticky black mess in the inlet manifold.20140422_202301.jpg20140422_202306.jpg

Don't forget to plug the vacuum pipe if you pull it off the actuator. Don't leave it dangling open.

Left all the vac pipes connected as i think it would bring up an error if i plugged it as it all feeds the vnt turbo and ecu via the n75 valve. The egr will still be working (opening and closing) just no nasty exhaust gas going into it anymore.

Wrong, should have done my homework first. My problem was down to the turbo boost valve sticking which was freed off and resolved problem.

In view of the comments however, I have purchased a stainless steel blanking plate for the EGR, just in case, at the pricely sum of £4.29 all the way from Poland. My mechanic said that when he had a problem he would cut a plate out of an old oil can as a temporary repair as it did burn through eventually.

egr

ive heard when using a blanking plate if it sets off management light the remedy is to drill a very small hole in the plate.

EGR Valve replacement.

Been having problems for the last couple of months with black smoke coming from van but only when I have been stopped for short time eg. Half hour or so. Been no problem when starting and driving from cold and no engine management light coming on. Having read this thread, I reckoned it had to be the EGR valve. Van passed the MOT emission test OK but still had black smoke and revving problems after test.
Van is Peugeot Boxer 2.2HD 2007 model 26k miles on clock.
Peugeot dealer wanted wanted £227 plus VAT for valve plus removal and fitting.
Now normally I would have done the work myself but I find that as I get older I lose the will to effect repairs myself and get someone else to do it.
I suppose I could have just got a garage to attempt to clean it but thought what the hell!
Anyway job done for total £288 and also have the old one for spare if required urgently.

I would say no better nor worse than a normal vehicle. Would more frequent oil changes prevent EGR valve clogging up?
I did retain the old valve and it is stuck open, although maybe not all the way. I may clean it myself and see if it opens and closes easily manually.

A poor oil /oil filter regime can effect the performance of the EGR valve and the turbo/ turbo boost valve no matter how many miles on the clock.
Not sure the OPs problem if EGR related?

Quite a common mod is to blank the EGR valve using a solid plate.

People doing so report better MPG and power (not massive, but noticeable)

However, with some engines it can throw up the engine management light.

Searching on vehicle/badge specific forums may well yield the answers you're looking for.

This. And OP - you're right, then low mileage won't help the EGR :(
