European Vignettes

Just some general advice and guidance required and i think I am over confusing myself.
Am planning a trip over to Poland, Slovakia, Hungary and back through Slovenia and Italy etc in my 4.5 tonne motorhome. So far after reading too many toll websites I thought I would ask here for advice.
Do I need a vignette even if I am planning to use local roads rather than thunder down the motorways, cant see the point in rushing after all we are supposed to be on holiday but on the other hand dont want to fall foul of the law and get fined.
Thanking whoever answers in advance

Some friends live in Czech, they only use local roads, but the local road was closed due to an accident and traffic was diverted onto motorway the fine for not having the vignette was more than five years payment and lots of hassle in a language that every time they filled the form in a jobsworth said they hadn't done it right, buy the vignette just for an easy life

Austria and Switzerland, definitely NO. The other countries i have no knowledge of.

We were going to drive smaller roads in Switzerland but somehow got diverted to motorway. It was a very easy mistake to make so ended up paying.

4 or 5 years back we were on motorway in Slovakia (I think) we didn't know about vignettes. Pulled into motorway services to get a bite to eat. Unfortunately there were two policemen parked up who spotted we hadn't got vignette. After half an hour of going through paperwork etc we were fined about £14 and had to buy vignette which was only about a fiver.

Tolls in europe

I never use the motorways in Europe, nor pay any tolls. No need to. In Switzerland, just avoid the green I think motorway signs. If you get onto a motorway by accident (easy with Swiss signage), simply get off at first exit.........Steve bristol

Austria is obviously free for normal roads, if you use the motorway you will need a vignette up to 3.5 tons, if you are over 3.5 tons you then need a GO box which can be very expensive to use.

Looks like its going to have to be the Go-Box option just to make sure, last thing I want is to fall foul of the law and get fined. Had enough of that in Spain

Hi, a few years back we went into Switzerland and not on motorways, we stopped at the border and were informed that we needed tobuy raod tax at 25 Swiss francs for 5 days because our motorhome was over 3500kg gross weight (Mercedes Sprinter 515 gross weight 5000kg), had to go into the office across the road from the check point and fill in the relevent paper work which took around 15 mins, bit of an expensive job for just 1 night in Swtzerland to see the Rhine Falls which is about 10km inside Switzerland.

If you are over 3.5t then vignettes are a bit of a nightmare and expensive.

I don't think you can see the best of the country or get around Norway easily without a contract or an AutoPass. there are just too many tunnels & ferries.

The same might be said for Switzerland because some local roads can be bloody difficult especially when you mix in bad weather.

If you are not in any hurry then getting around France without using toll roads is quite easy. The motorways around the major towns are usually toll free.

But how easy is it to get around Austria, Czech Republic, Slovenia, Hungary & Romanian without using toll roads? And how can you tell a toll road from a free road?

We were in Switzerland a couple of months back. We crossed the border were pointed towards the car park and there were a handful of people taking your cash and applying the tax disc. There was almost no chance to refuse.

to mr Weston . yes you can refuse the vignette being stuck to your windscreen, just tell him/her YOU re not using the motorway, I get this every time I cross the border from France from Pontarlier soon after the border crossing there is a round about, I think its the E23 that coasts the lake of Lausanne or Geneva I don't know exactly, I always refuse the bloody thing, they do not know at this stage whether you will be using the motorway or not, so you have to insist that YOU ARE NOT, eventually they will move you on.:scooter::scooter::scooter::scooter::scooter::scooter::scooter::scooter::scooter:
