We are planning a trip through Europe and wondered if there is a TAG system in place on their toll roads to save using cash? If there is how and where can I purchase one?

Thank you all who have advised, I will go and pay by card, as I'm to late to purchase a pre ordered card and nowhere does it say its any cheaper. I will let you know how we get on

Looked into this a year or so ago and Eurotunnel had a 'special offer' on for the French system. When I looked then it was still cheaper to get it from the official sites. We didn't bother as I think there was a monthly fee and we didn't visit enough to make it worth while. Most payage in france offer to pay by card so we got a Halifax Clarity credit card which has no fees for using abroad.

You can just put your credit card in the toll machines - and press button to get a receipt. No need for cash, and no need to put your pin in very easy

When I read the AS 24 card, I couldn't spot that you can go through the pre pay lanes - if you can then that's what we will go for! if you can't, then won't you still be stuck behind those who can't work the machines??

for us lot who live here we always try to stay of toll roads but always save all the cents and the odd euro and just but it in the bucket we call it and go through ;)

For us it depends on what the weather is like when we get across the channel - cold & wet, toll roads here we come, nice & sunny, and we tootle down & the same when we are travelling home.

So you're one of the people with the queues behind you Kenspain, while you copper up :rolleyes2: ;)

O no we know how much the toll will be so always have the money waiting its you lot that hold us up because a lot of you have the steering wheel on the wrong side.:lol-049::lol-049::lol-049::lol-049::wave:

Must have missed it too. So the Eurotrafic card also works in the Liber-t lanes too?

Maybe driver on wrong side, but passenger is ready with the visa, so no hold ups from me

Just back from a 6 week trip to Spain and France done just over 3,000 miles and never went on a toll road, as usual we put no tolls into the sat nave, and doing this you see so much more of the country, If you are in a hurry to get some wear then may be use them, but for us we are on holiday so why rush every where.

Watch out for card charges!

If you are paying for tolls with a credit or debit card, watch out for the card charges. If you use many short sections of toll road between free sections or non-motorways as I did last month, it can add up. Example: for a short length which cost £4.34 for the toll, my Halifax debit card charged £1.50 purchase fee plus a non-sterling transaction fee of 2.75% (11p). In 3 weeks travel I spent about £40 on tolls but the card fees added up to nearly £20 more. Same applies if paying for aires with a card. Check card charges before you go!

I am always on my own while driving for work and use a Shell Fuel Card to pay tolls. I stop just short of the machine, climb out, run around, pay and get a receipt as quickly as most left handers can faff around hunting for change like they are surprised to be asked to pay, a little like some ladies at the supermarket checkout.

For French autoroutes you can get the official tag from https://www.saneftolling.co.uk/ - this allows you to just drive through the automatic lane. I'm not sure about the cross-Europe solution mentioned previously.

True about using a UK debit or credit card, you will get hefty usage charges levied by your card issuer but this isn't specific to the autoroute tolls. There are some specialist credit cards which do not have charges for using abroad, Money Saving Expert will give you the full rundown on this.
