Hey fellow adventures
Off to Europe for the first time in April, does anyone know if I need to have deflectors on my projector headlight please? It seems like there's not much lens for them and as they are set back in the bodywork I can't see how they would work! That said I really don't want to fall foul of our neighbours law enforcement officers.

I had a hymer once with twin headlights really set back and there was an adjustment like a wire actually n the back of the lights

I agree that there is probably a means of converting the lights internally from RHD to LHD.

Before investigating in depth I'd suggest a test. Park facing a white wall or light coloured surface about 20 yards or so back and check if there is an uplift to the dipped beam on the nearside. There may not be such an uplift, in which case no action is required.

Check your handbook on that model there may be a switch on top of the headlamp to alter beam for driving on the other side of the road a dealer would also inform you

My Sprinter based MH has normal lights but no noticeable indication where deflectors should be placed. Nobody has been able to help with this so I just stick them on where they look right, despite them actually doing nothing. I've been going over the ditch since 2009 and never been stopped. I do however tend to drive in daylight so the Missus 'n' me can enjoy the scenery.

If you are going for the first time make sure that you have an up to date copy of 'All the Aires' from Vicarious Books in Hastings with you. This is unquestionably the most useful guide you can have in your glove box. The second is the ACSI club card and site guide. This gives you discounted pitches in member sites all over Europe. Worth is weight in gold. I never leave without them. AND I don't even get a discount!

Use the Aires as much as possible, it will save you a fortune and the fellow travelers are very friendly.

Eurolites have a leaflet that clearly shows you where to put the beam deflectors depending on the model and year of your base vehicle.

Having said that i lost count of the number of people that couldn`t or didn`t want to understand the very simple to use instructions so i gave up helping.
 
Whilst queued at Dieppe yesterday for the ferry back I looked around all the vehicle headlights whilst walking the dog, NO French or other EU vehicles, car,trucks, vans had any headlight deflectors on (though of course maybe some have the setting to change mechanically or on the dash), A few few UK ones did and one guy was trying his hardest to remove the tacky mess off his light for the drive home.
I reciprocate the EU approach and do nothing when in the motorhome. Though my car has a LH and RH setting on the dash screen so I do tap that appropriately when at the port.

I always used beam benders when going over to Europe because when we went we wanted to relax and enjoy it and not have some jobsworth of a Gendarme pull us over because he hasn`t had a shag and usual bottle of wine with a baguette for breakfast.

It`s very very very easy to remove the glue residue that removing the beam benders leaves behind if you follow the instructions, here`s what i used to do.

1, Turn on headlights to warm up the glue on the way to the docks.

2, As soon as i got into the boarding lane i got out and carefully pealed off the beam benders which then left the residue on the lenses.

3, Use Methylated Spirits, DO NOT USE White Spirits because that seems to set the glue solid.

4, Finally apply your preferred polish to the lenses and all is good.

My father-in-law only went over to France once and when he came back he used White Spirits because that`s all he had despite me warning him not to, the residue glue was on his headlights for years before i finally got it off for him using a headlight resoration kit and an awful lot of effort 🤬

Or just leave them on, which is what I do.

I don't drive at night unless it's essential, and on the rare occasions that I do I have not missed the slight nearside illumination loss.
