EU- president

:mad:I'm English always have been, always will be, I love visiting Europe and the rest of the world. But lets all keep our own identities and customs lets VISIT each other instead of becoming one great big 'identity - less' blob of land. WE are different, we are an island, we are English.
Just as the Belgians, the French etc etc.
I want to be able to celebrate my culture & heritage just like everyone else. Of course, I also want to take on and respect the culture of others when VISITING not when they come here and tell me what I can & cant celebrate eg:St Georges Day, or have a Union Jack.
I will respect your countries if you respect mine

I have met some amazing people from all over the world in my camper, we shared stories, and tales from all walks of life...save our identies !!

I'm half Scottish half Irish, where do we draw the borders?

Wannae buy a Passport hen?

In your case, somewhere between Stranraer and Larne, I guess. But this is getting uncomfortable - find something we can disagree on - and quick!!

O.K. I get the last word!!!!! Agreed.

I take it by your silence on the matter that the issue is hereby resolved!!!:D

I consider myself to be European.

I do this on the basis that I have a lot of relatives buried in France and Belgium.

The Union Jack is, sorry, was so called because it was the Union Flag flown on the Jack staff of the Admirals ship i.e. flagship.. Maybe not a precise answer but like yourself I cannot be bothered to research it any further, just comes from my sketchy general knowledge.:p

I'm so pleased Tony Liar got the elbow. He really thought he had it made a month or so back. I wonder if all those news items suggesting he was a shoe-in for the position were actually the result of a load of spin and media manipulation he instigated himself, thinking he could pull them same tricks like when he lied over Iraq.

.

OK.. you lot... so where the fek is Europe then :confused:.. is it foreign :eek:

regards

Hi islanders,
I should be enlighted: a Flemish (Van Rompuy) for EU president
On one hand; we are glad to get rid of our prime minister (an innocent man who did nothing but keeping Belgium more or less together)
On the other hand: proud a Flemish could be the first president of Europe...
But: don't fear the man ! He might seems to be a Belgian (Flemish) lion; (but a lion without teeth and claws). I can assure you: he's grey, he's the trustfull grandfather, he's wallpaper, but he will put on a great protocol show: he's harmless.
We only fear who will be our next prime: the one who toke 'La Marseillaise" as the Belgian national anthem ? or 'Madame Non" ??,:D
The Belgian soap is expanding to Europe, I fear :eek::(
hehe :p:D

Hi, I can cope with an insigificant Belgium, just, I have real difficulty with an even more insignificant Brit. Baroness Ashton - Never been elected to any office, never been a diplomat, never even been a junior foreign minister, is now HIGH representative of European foreign affairs. You wily Europeans would give Blackadder a run for his money.

Personally, I don't give a toss who occupies any of these basically ceremonial positions - none of them have the power to make any decisions so why worry about it. If you start electing them they will expect REAL powers. Their importance is merely symbolic and I would far rather be friends with the rest of Europe than we end up beating the hell out of each other as we did twice in the last century (ok, so it costs us - but not as much as that bloody war.......).

Hi John H,
I appear to have lit your fire somewhat in my gentle reply to Leo & his semi serious comments. However, since you have mentioned the war it gives me opportunity to reply. The 2nd World war was fought purely for the retention of democracy, unlike the 1st. Having won that particular conflict at great cost one would suppose that democracy would be important to us. My point is that this lady now occupies a very powerful position, more so than the Belgium gentleman occupies. To reach this position without an initial democratic process involvement is unacceptable to me, and should be to all of us.
“For evil to flourish it is only necessary for good men to do nothing”. Is just one of the many variations of the statements that describes apathy?

I would dispute your analysis of the second world war but that would lead us down too many side alleys. The point I was making is that because the position occupied by the Baroness is largely powerless then we should not get so excited about it being unelected. All diplomatic posts are filled by unelected individuals who are appointed by the elected Government of the day - and Ambassadors generally have a great deal more real power than she is ever going to have. In fact, one of the reasons why we have been landed with two unknowns is because the elected leaders of the EU member states don't want their own authority (and that of their respective foreign ministers) challenged in any way. She is symbolic - a bit like the Royal Family only with the ability to answer back.
