Engine temperature guage no working

The engine temperature guage on the dashboard is no longer reading. Its a 2009 Fiat Ducato campervan, 100 JTD 2.2L Ford Puma engine.

No warning lights on.

When I checked the coolant resevoir it was just below the minimium line, which has never happened before. It needed nearly 1.5 litres to fill it to the maximum line. I've not driven it since so I don't know whetherthe level will go down again.

Looks like a leak as well as a faulty sensor / guage / wiring.

Any ideas?
 
Stole this from elsewhere - also a 2009 Fiat Ducato. (snipped the relevant responses)

"It will most likely be the engines temperature sensor has failed.
To check it remove the wire from the sensor and touch it to the engine block. The gauge should show maximum temp"

"As far as I remember the temperature sensor is to the rear of the head top right.
Readily available on eBay but it's a big nut size"

As I posted on another thread, rad leaks on the bottom corner are quite common on this age of van, I'm not sure if this would relate to the temperature gauge, or if that's just coincidental.
p.s. on the 2.3 there's a plastic tray under the engine on the drivers side, on ours the tray had a puddle from the leaking rad.

If the fluid level fall below the location of the sensor then the sensor will not send a signal to th gauge.

My advice ie to use radweld, top up with coolant and then go for a 10-15 mile drive.

Never ever use Radweld!

Dreadful stuff and a mechanic's nightmare!
 
Disconect the Positive wire on the cab battery leave off for 5 min reconect and see if that helps, or do what Robmac says and that should diagnose if your sensor is faulty

1. Coolant topped up
2. Van driven until engine warmed up to normal
3. Engine temperature guage still not working
4. No sign of water leaks with engine warm and running
5. No drop in the coolant level

I would appreciate it if someone could tell me where the temperature sensor is on the engine block (2009 Fiat Ducato, 100 JTD 2.2L Ford Puma) as despite searching I can't find it. A photo would be very helpful.

Never had a Ford diesel but look for the water pump (its pulley will be driven by the V belt driven by the crankshaft. There will be a fitting with a wire going to it (there may be 2 of them actually). That is where you will find it.
