Hi Our 2005 Citroen Relay hdi van has just had above light come on( red) halfway to destination, any suggestions? Do we need to stop? call breakdown? Temp gauge is middle not hot at all. Been stuck in traffic on Dartford crossing, now moving but light been in for about 20 mins.

Do you get hot air out of the heater? What exactly does the light look like?

Is it this?

hot water

Tricky giving arms length advice but... turn heater on full with max blower: do you get hot air from the heater? If so then no real water loss. If the temperature gauge is normal, no signs of overheating from the engine while stationary then it points to a sensor. Are the engine fans running or not? they use a different sensor so if not running it again points to normal water temperature.

I had a similar problem on a 1999 td, temp gauge ok but red overheat light on, it turned out to be the sensor.

HOWEVER! Do check the engine is not overheating by looking under the bonnet, do not remove radiator cap but just look for leaks, steam or general distress. A moments checking could save you a lot of money.

:mad1::mad1: thanks everyone! Got to the services, let it cool and looked under bonnet...no ****water in radiator!!! It was serviced last week so stupidly assumed that simple things like levels had been checked !! Will be having words with the garage on our return! Feel pretty silly but we were on the motorway and not sure whether to stop on hard shoulder. OH always continues if possible, for safety ( and towing costs!!) Whereas I worry we might blow up! 😂
Glad not serious!. No leaks apparent so hopefully ok.

Was not either of those...it looked like an engine with a fan inside and wiggles for water under the fan! Made worse by the fact I had carefully stowed the manual in the back of the van so could not look in there either!

Sounds like water in fuel filter signal.on the bottom of fuel filter there's a tap to drain filter ,slacken off let it run out for a short period then retighten ,no bleeding of system required ,done with engine not running ,I will post sign and see if it is it

Water in fuel

Was this like itIMG_0335.jpg if it's this no probs to continue to drive it may go off on cornering etc

NEVER EVER trust a dealership / garage / workshop implicitly :mad2:

First thing i do before i even start the engine and leave the premises is to pop up the bonnet and have a quick look and check the levels myself :hammer:

I`ve found things ranging from the oil filler cap missing to no coolant and once a bloody great 24" Snap On pry / jemmy bar balanced on top of the engine :scared:

If any warning light is RED, stop immediately it is safe to do so.

If it is an AMBER warning light, it is more advisory but should still be taken seriously.

By the way, I hope you did not put cold water into your engine until it had cooled down. That could be a very expensive mistake. :(

It should not be like this but so often it is.

They should be doing a better job than you could ever do.

I used to have my car serviced at home by a guy,

last time I was not at home while he was doing it.

Found 4 spanners under the bonnet.

Driving the car a few days later the wiper blades went out of sync and crashed into each other, 80 miles from home I had to call the breakdown service, the mechanic had not tightened the wiper arms after putting them back on.

Enough is enough, that was the last time I had him service my car.

Brother recently had the first service carried out on his wife's Audi TT at his local Audi dealer, not the dealer he bought it from last year.
2 weeks later it had to go back in to have a piece of dash trim fitted that was not available when he had it serviced.
Apparently they always do a quick check of levels etc as a matter of course and low and behold they found the engine oil level virtually to the top of the dipstick. They emailed him with an attached video of the oil level explaining the damage this could / may have caused.
My brother had not even looked at the oil level never mind top it up, needless to say he went ballistic with them and to cut a long story short the next 2 services are foc and the operative who did the oil change has been disciplined or so they say !
Personnelly I wouldn't go back there regardless if the services are foc.

Dealers ? £325 spent on a sliding door hinge 2 days later it dropped off again bottom hinge broken now took it to my local garage this afternoon they told me the rubber wheels on the bottom hinge had been cut with a knife
Sabotage by vauxhall main dealer in Edinburgh to gain more money
Ordered one on eBay 12 quid he will fit it for 20 big difference :hammer::hammer::hammer::mad1:

How about the engine?

Bit of thread drift, why was there no water in the radiator? Even if it was not checked on a service it's gone somewhere.... How is the engine? Let's hope all is fine and the holiday can continue.

I would also be concerned as to where the water went, head gasket pump leak ,hose loose or not refilled at service.
One sure thing is never fill with water but a antifreeze mix or whatever the makers use,use water only in a get you home situation.
Do get a pressure test done.
Never fil a hot engine with cooled water as it will soon start to burn oil big style.
Never open a hot engine, let it cool for about half hour.

Back again! Sorry to the mechanic....nearly arrived at the site and light came on again ! Pouring water out of the bottom, need new radiator! Could not see a leak when we first stopped and checked ( we did let it cool down first btw!) But obviously there was one. Dave had read somewhere about egg whites stopping rad leaks so, as needed new one anyway, we tried it...not a drop came out after that. Got to the stop fine and booked into garage for new radiator in morning! Bit of exciting start to a trip away..good job I had some eggs. Must admit I was dubious about them though.
