It turns out my husband and I are not the cleverest of custards.

We are about to leave Morocco and spend one month driving back through France and Spain to the UK. It turns out we have been away from the UK just long enough that our European motor insurance cover is invalid.

Does anyone know if we can get temporary cover just for a month through France and Spain? Is it possible to pick something like that up from a Spanish travel agent? Or an insurer in Algeciras?

We have tried English insurers but it seems you need to start the trip in the Uk in a vehicle less than 10 years old to get anywhere!

Any help would be appreciated!:o

Hi,
No panic
Only phone or e-mail your insurance co your green card cover is overtime. Normally they keep your covering going on even if the time is over. They'll send you a temporally new green card by @ or an other valid notification.

Thanks for the feedback.
We had called them already and the girl told us we had broken the law by taking out a second temporary insurance to tour Morocco. Something to do with identity theift? It sounded bizzare to me.
We will try them again.

That's nonsense! They couldn't provide you with insurance cover for Morocco so the fact that you had to source cover elsewhere is nothing to do with them and certainly not illegal!

If you still have a valid UK insurance policy you are covered (at the minimum required level) to drive anywhere within the EU. This is from the Motor Insurers Bureau:
"... a Green Card is not required by law to cross borders within the European Union. This is because every EU country complies with the First Directive on Motor Insurance which says that every insurance policy issued in the EU must provide the minimum insurance cover required by law in any other EU country.
