Generally speaking we buy local when we’re on a trip, shopping every other day or so, and using farm shops etc when we can. But I keep some emergency rations on board just in case. We’ve actually only used them once, I think, in Scotland when it was foul weather and we had a problem with the van. I’m restocking and wondered what other people keep in reserve? I’m going to pack

Mineral water and ano soft drink
Baked beans
Can of soup
Packet of pasta sauce (always have rice and pasta anyway)
Can of tuna or some meat or other
Emergency dog food; we can go hungry but I don’t think the dog would ever forgive us

We always have tea, coffee etc so that doesn’t count.

Plus of course, a bottle or two....

SWMBO went in our local farm shop a few weeks ago and asked where they got their bacon was from. The Butchers on the Parade was the answer. So we might as well go to the Butchers on the Parade and buy it there instead and cut out the middle man. We stopped at another last week only to find out it had been taken over by Budgens. Which is part of Booker who are owned by TESCO.

As for emergency supplies we usually have some ready meals in the freezer and food in the fridge. We used to keep supplies in the boat but on examining them one day I realised that most were well past their use by date with some rust on the outside

..

Aside from a tin of
Potatoes
Butter beans
Sweet corn
Kidney beans
Jar of dolmio type sauce

For flinging in the slow cooker...

You cood do worse than a couple MRE (Meal ready to eat) packs for extreme times....
Especially now they do pizza ;-)

I have more food in the van than in the house ! It’s got that bad that every other month I don’t buy any canned food when i do the big monthly shop to replenish the house food stocks and just use the canned food from the van.
I sorted out the van food supplies before Xmas and had 8 cans of soup, 4 cans of red salmon, 9 yes 9 cans of peas, it was the same for baked beans, carrots, potatoes, sweet corn, ambrosia rice and tins of fruit salad, etc, etc. That’s without the box’s of rice, pasta and packets of Idohohan instant mash of various flavours lol.
One thing I always take is part baked buns. They usually have a best before date of a month so ideal if you love bread like I do and not near a shop and have an oven.

Same here.... Well worth looking at some of the sealed wraps too....
The sell by dates often make a nuclear winter look like spring Bank Holiday.

Plus a Fray Bentos pie and powdered or long life milk.
Luurve a Fray Bentos pie! Have you seen the new recipe ones? Twice the price but I have to try them

I just emptied my van's larder cupboard. I keep a lot of tinned tomatoes in there for the base of chilli, bolognaise and curry, plus for cooked breakfasts of course. I've got a few basic meds in there like paracetamol, ibuprofen, strepsils and Beechams, plus rice, 2 kinds of pasta, a couple of tins of soup, a pot noodle for dire emergencies and a couple of basic sauces that I can 'tart up'. Oh and some crackers for cheese and some ready-to-eat custard. This all gets used on trips or recycled in the house regularly, so no problem with it going out of date.
So why did I empty the cupboard? Well, the bottom's falling out of it because of all the weight! Embarrassed.gif

All good things to have at home over the winter, if the weather is bad then you have something to eat.

Maggi noodles with added tin of sweetcorn and some blue dragon HOT sweet chilli sauce is a staple too.
(much nicer AND cheaper than Not poodles too ;-)

Sweet chilli sauce is a must-have for me too but I keep it in another cupboard, thank goodness. It's such a staple, it's up with the tea, coffee, sugar, salt, pepper, olive oil, stock cubes, brown sauce (can't have a bacon sarnie without that either) and all the other usual suspects for cooking with or shaking on top, plus all the plates and mugs. Yes, I do a lot of cooking in the van! I'd best check the bottom of those cupboards too...

Obvviously I add to this locally for tasty treats that I just can’t resist, Then I’ve got my Parts Locker for visitors that pop around for a Bite, & The Fridge for Road kill treats if I’m watching a movie or can’t be bothered to Shuffle far from my couch.

I usually have a tin or two of chicken curry plus curry powder and Nan bread.
Beans and tomatoes of course, tinned veg, concentrated soup and corned beef.
Tinned fruit and rice pud.
I cleared my cupboard out last year, way too much soup.

Tinned potatoes are handy along with rice boil in the bag ,pasta tinned custard, jam curried beans chick pees ,all else fails a bottle of black bush.

Sell by date.

The trouble of leaving tins in the van is finding one that is long past it’s sell by date ,mind you I like to except a challenge ,I have never thrown anything out yet and am still breathing.

I have an 'overspill' box in my van where I keep extra toothpaste, toilet rolls, pasta and tea bags and all other basics !!
I have turned into my mother when it comes to over buying and stocking up.... God if I had a basement I would be in my element ... I woul definitely be a prepper

Porridge oats
Ready cooked rice
Tins of Beans...baked & kidney
Tinned tuna & pink salmon
Noodles
Dried pasta tortellini
Pesto
Stir fry sauce...Satay, hoisin
Soya sauce, mayo, mustard plus some odd sachets filched from cafés
Various spices
Lemon juice
Flour ( for bread, pizza bases, pancakes, scones, thickening sauce etc)
Sugar, tea, coffee, cupasoup, hot choc sachets

Impressed with NZ's 6 cans of deodorant!.

Trouble is as we go to various shops on our journeys I always pick up other "come in useful" extras which rarely are...get eaten on return home!

I wish I could find a powdered milk I like ...
Oh and butter, I always for get the bloody butter wish I could keep a stash of the little ones you get in b&b and services.
It drives me mad when we have to stop en route to anywhere ..
