I want to get a cable but have no experience of using 'hook up' on sites. 25 meter of cable seems quite excessive as I thought you parked in a bay. At the moment I'm thinking one 10m and can get a second 10m if required but there must be a reason why people haul 25m of cable around!!

Not all sites have hook up points where you want them and not all sites have bays - thank goodness. We carry a 25 metre and a 10 metre cable. You don't really want to be joining 2 x 10 metre cables together, there is always the possibility of water ingress at the join.

Ebay have them,or shorten one yourself, you can also buy carry bags on ebay to keep them tidy.

The last couple of metres of our 25m cable got mangled, so had to shorten it to around 20m, on a couple of sites in Europe this resulted in it being a tight stretch, now carry a 10m cable as well.

....and all the above is why this is a great forum. Good advice and can now make a more educated purchase

Thank you

When we bought our vehicle the agent supplied a 10m and a 25m cable (at our expense)
He has been justified........ quite often we need the 25m cable and we have (only a few times) linked them together.

We often wild with no EHU but if we are on a site or an aire and EHU is cheap or free or included we will want to use it.
As others have posted
1 take care it is uncoiled when in use
2 take care when re-coiling it to go with the cable -flow to avoid stressing it

Tookey I have two.
a 10m cable that I use at home and a 25m cable that I always carry even when wild camping in the van. And on one occasion I needed almost the whole length of my 25m cable. But make sure you completely unwind the cable even for short distances, not doing so can generate heat and prove dangerous.

Heres one on eBay for £24.49 inc delivery.

I bought two extra plugs and cut my 25 meter cable into two one piece at 10m leaving the other at 15m so in effect I have the choice of three lengths 10m 15m and joined together 25m.
For most of the time I only ever need the 10m

This is what can happen if you don't uncoil a hook up lead. Meks ya think dunnit?

Cheers

I found out that a lot of sites in France have the polarity reversed. (This toasted my Elekrobloc one year). So I bought this kit on ebay. You can test the polarity prior to connecting it to your van and use the "reverse" lead to convert it back.

I attended a fire around 30 years ago were a young boy died caused by the same thing in his bedroom. He had a 2kw electric fire plugged directly into the cable holder with most the cable still wrapped around holder. To make matters worse it was situated under his bed.

Good advice. I don’t travel abroad, but when I hook up in the uk I always check the supply with a tester, just to be safe. I have never found any issues but better safe than sorry.

I passed on the same warning to a friend who kept a coiled cable under his bed which was under load (cable and bed!), fortunately he heeded the advice as he likes to get hammered on occasion and would not have woken quickly.

I have never found a problem with a UK site (yet) but like you I always check it out anyway. (The Elecktrobloc cost nearly £200 to repair)

Ours is a Burstner ( German) so does anyone know if these vans are built for use on French electric or should I buy a Polarity tester anyway.

On some of the sites we've stayed on our 10 metre lead was just that little bit too short and I got a little bit fed up of uncoiling the 25 metre lead just for the extra metre or two, so I ended up buying a 15 metre which now seems to get used more than the other two.
Regards.

I would always use a tester, even in the uk never mind abroad.

Using mains electric with reversed polarity is not safe.
A tester will only cost £6-10 pounds and it takes seconds to plug it in and check.
