Hi you might already know this site, the guy Steve knows all there is about these engines.
Have tried to copy & paste but wont let me !

Google "jktowers" and it comes up

Regards Wyn

I'm loving this thread, Strobes, Advancing the ignition, needle jets all I need to hear now are the words 'feeler gauges' and I'll be 21 all over again on my Triumph :D :D

Hi Mark
You will love this !
Went into Halfrauds a couple of months ago as I couldnt find my feeler gauges, paid at the "technical" counter and the guy asked me what they were and what do you use them for !
Wyn

BG is absolutely correct about needing feeler gauges.

Having driven diesels for donkeys years I forgot to mention to check the plug gap. I often found them wrong on brand new plugs and always checked them before fitting them.

SO GET SOME FEELER GAUGES!

IS THAT OK BIGGIRAFE????

Have already done plugs to 0.6mm they are NGk's were set to 1mm whem they were bought , yes we used feeler guages, and when we did the tappets .
We have checked the jktowers website already.I beleive Bobbed has this set as a homepage LOL|..

oh forgot to add Bobbed has had the mixture set today . He report its running quite well now, the timing is set to 6 degrees.
:D:D

just alittle bit of a miss changing from 1st to second gear.So its getting there..

I think Distributor , timing fault :)- Others seem to think fuel

Shame I cant say the same about my Transit steering.:mad:

Ok enough with the feeler gauges Maingate :D

I know what you mean Wyn I was in Halfords not long ago as well, They still do have what you need and they can order most things at a price, But they are more intrested in selling hifi and body styling kits now. The kids know nothing about engines, pretty good with satnavs though :)

I guess its a sign of the times, cars are just so reliable now that they can't make money on DIY stuff.

Basic stuff that I guess you have checked...
Have you changed the HT leads?
Checked the advance / retard vacuum pipe
Checked the cap for cracks?

Couple of other possibles not yet mentioned:-

Vacuum advance sticking in the full advance or returning too slowly to non advance position when accelerating after changing gear.

Carburetor ecomony device not shutting off and allowing air bleed to weaken mixture even under acceleration conditions when it shouldn't.

Hi geoff , Thanks for the post,s .
We have had the timing gun on the timing marks whilst the van is stationary , what we have done was dissconect the vaccum pipe from the carb and sucked on the pipe to see if the timing mark moves, It does to around 20-30 degrees btdc, and then returns to the "6 deg btdc" mark.
But basing on your reply what I have thought is Does the distributor have advance weights and springs???, like the old ford crossflow dissys had.??

if so the springs might have stretched so the dissy cant return to its "un advanced position "properly or quickly enough", or If the dissy needs oiling.

Plug leads need changing , Also dissy cap and arm are "intermotor" brand , I personaly think are a bit rubbish , It realy needs an original "duciller" cap and arm.
Also the coil could be breaking down (But Doubtful) as we are getting a good orange spark from it

The thing is this Isn't my Van its "Bobbed's" who lives over the road from me, so I have no control over the purchasing of new parts.

What we need is someone with a simmilar engine locally so we can substitute known working parts , just to try ??:D:D:D anyone ???:(:(

Lubrication !!! :D

This is an update .

Original fault hesitation and spluttering between 1st & 2nd gear , also between 2nd and 3rd gear to a lesser degree on 1993/4 talbot express 170b 2.0l petrol engine.

What we had done/changed

Changed / regapped plugs 0.6mm
changed leads (Brand new)
changed rotor arm and dissy cap for the M130e distributor(the proper Intermotor cap has side exit leads)
Carb stripped and cleaned & blown through 3 times
Fuel tank removed and cleaned + new filters and pipes
new fuel pump
new coil and ignition pack.

NONE OF THE ABOVE CURED THE FAULT. :(

However , we did a supply voltage chect to the coil/ignition pack and dissy all was ok , so decided to strip the distributor, There was no visiable damage but the Advance weights were sticking to the base plate.

Lack of lubrication -:D:D

After a bit of cleaning and oiling and couple of days running around

and a few sleeples nights and a lot of hassle.

"BOBBED" reports problem gone. and running "PERFECT"

it took a while But another Difficult fault now found.

Thanks to all who contributed.

So Another one sorted.

My Transit Steering Done and BoBbed's Misfire Both repaired and ready to go.

I managed to get away this weekend - Pictures will be on later. :)
