Elbow Joint Leaking

As you might know we are off down south tomorrow to Hastings in Kent.
I reckon it will be a good four hour drive with only one stop for my dog to have a leak.
So today I’ve been stocking the van up with “Farm Foods” quick and easy meals so we can keep dish washing down to a minimum which in turn saves on water, sensible don’t you think.
While in Lidl the other day I picked up a 2012 road atlas for a squid, bang on I say.
Despite buying a road atlas I also have a Garmin Sat Nav on order, looks like that will arrive while we are away unfortunately, unless it arrives with tomorrows dawn chorus. Neighbour put on red alert.
Two gas bottles both new so they will last us, fresh water tank at 95% full [never can get 100%] but it wouldn’t have been if I hadn’t checked something that my fiancé son had mentioned this morning after spending the night in the Van.
There was a water leak just before the boiler drain valve.
He mentioned this morning that he heard a dripping sound but he didn’t know where it was coming from.
Picture below of new elbow joint, it’s the black coloured joint.
I didn’t panic, I thought to myself where am I going to get a replacement.
My fiancé suggested I go to our local “Plumbs” but I had a better idea, I’ll go to Sawley Marina a five minute drive away they are bound to have one!!
No Sir sorry we don’t stock them, you could try Lowdham Caravans, which is on the other side of Nottingham. I said I reckon that will be the last port of call, would take me an hour to go there.
You could tray Long Eaton caravans another five minute drive away.
So that’s what I did.
Showed the chap behind the counter the part I was after, he mumbled something under his breath and disappeared through a door leaving me on my own.
As my eyes skirted the shelves of spare parts they settled on something that looked very like what I was after but in black. I plucked the plastic bag this part was imprisoned in from its counter parts and took a closer look, spot on I said just what I’m after, price tag of £3.99
By the time I got it back to the counter the chap walked back through the door.
I found what I was after I said,
He said “I knew we had some somewhere”!
So there you go panic over and job done.
Hastings here we come……

Ps.. if I couldn’t get what I was after I was going to try wrapping some plumbers tape around the pipe before inserting back into the elbow joint.

Surprised Sawley didn't have one really. They used to have quite a well stocked Chandlery.

Looks like any 90 degree bend you could have got from a plumbers merchant or B&Q, however it's fixed and you are happy.

Good job you got the road atlas because I don't know how to break this to you gently but Hastings is not in Kent :)

Near enough I reckon to Kent Outtolunch …East Sussex
Now you understand why I let my fiance do the Map reading.

Sawley Marina and Long Eaton Caravans were nearer than my local plumbing merchants, and they would have been my next port of call if all else had failed me shortcircuit.

I suppose the stretching of borders is what we we have to expect from you outlaws in Nottinghamshire after all you had to pinch a bit of Yorkshire to put your airport on :D

and if you get any more trouble with those joints try a smear of silicone grease on them, they rely on an O ring griping the pipe when pressure is applied and a bit of grease can help a sticky O ring move. PTFE is good for iffy compression fittings and with all fittings if all else fails a roll of self amalgamating rubber tape works wonders.

Some years ago I had a similar leek; but found that by putting the end of a screwdriver/spoon etc against the inner part and pushing it slightly outwards the rubber rengaged and the leek stopped for good (so far)
Might save you £3-99 and time fuel etc.
Hope that helps. I'm not trying to be a clevercloggs. Just my experience!!

Yorkshire??

I wouldn’t think that at all colliezack, grateful for any advise gleaned from your experience.

Outtolunch..may I ask which airport you are referring to?
East Midlands is the one I use [ten minutes away by car] whenever going abroad, I believe that’s in Leicestershire.

The new elbow joint has held up with no leeks but have found another joint that is somewhat doddy.
I don’t believe I have any Silicon grease outtolunch.

Am I right in thinking to push a screw driver into the end of the pipe to widen the bore slightly Colliezack?

I was referring to Robin Hood Airport in Yorkshire

and washing up liquid works as a lubricant but does not last like silicone will as it will slowly leech into the water other greases will work but not recommended as they can also leech oils into the water and vegetable based oils will oxidise and harden over time.

also if when you remove a pipe from one of those fittings and there is a slight indentation around the area that was in the fitting cutting off a small section will give the fitting a tighter grip on a new section of pipe

Nooo.

I have an ELddis. Maybe your pipework is different. I had to pull out the 'Inner Sleve' to stop a leak.
Does that make sense/ Anybody else help on this one?

I had the same problem in my Autoquest, took it apart and repositioned it job done, I also pushed the lip of the joint to tighten it up.
Clive.
