Eberspacher D2 heater puzzle

My van has an Eberspacher D2 space heater working off the main diesel tank.
It works well and is adequate for the size of vehicle.
My puzzle is with the control panel buttons. Red for hot with a snail type thermostat, blue for cold and a centre off button. Simple!
Well not really, some days the red activates the heater and the blue does the cooling fan as it should.
BUT
Some days the controls are reversed. Red blows cold and Blue fires up the heater.
Any ideas what is going on?

Eberspacher D2 heater

Ken are you sure they are reversed, when you turn on the D2 it takes a few minutes of fan at the a slow speed for the heater to fire up and get warm if you turn the heater off and then put the fan on you get the warm air residue of heat still in the heater.
If it is as you say is it still under warrenty if not look for your nearest Eberspatcher dealer but be warned they are not cheap.

Thanks Alf,
It's no longer under warrenty and I have noticed the very high price of spares so it's not going to a dealer unless it dies!
I will spend more time with it but usually the cold setting starts quickly and the hot setting doesn't do much for a minute or two then it clicks and starts to heat.
I guess it could be me not operating it correctly.

Hi Ken,

The blue button activates ventilation mode which should always just blow non-heated air. The red button is heat mode, but if the ambient temperature near the thermostat is already warmer than the temp the thermostat is set to, it will also just blow non-heated air until the ambient temperature falls below the pre-set value.

Is your D2 installed in a warm area of the van? i.e. next to the main exhaust pipe? That may be affecting it.

Regards, Rich.

Hi Rich
It appears to take air in from the space beneath the fridge, under the side of the seat base then out through the plastic vent. There may be something in your suggestion.
The van is a professional conversion (Autosleeper) and the heater fitted as original equipment.
Thanks
Ken

Thanks for your answers.
Repairs now completed in 15mins by the main agent.
The problem was a faulty control unit (ICU) which had to be replaced.
Apparently the earlier 12v D2s were fitted with a troublesome ICU and Eberspacher changed the supplier to Hella to supply the current model which is generally trouble free.
The bad news - £372 fitted inc.vat and no recall from Eberspacher.
