East Lothian to allow overnight parking in two car parks.

It's good news - but the timings - 10pm to 6am. ... eek ... Does that mean if we turn up at 8pm we need a ticket to cover to 10pm then get up at 6am to get another ticket as we really don't want to move-on until a good breakfast would have been had, the dog (& us) walked and generally having a leisurely time...

I'm assuming they wouldn't be so stupid !

so I decided to ask and got a very quick reply:

Good Afternoon,
Thank you for your enquiry.

Parking is free between 6.30pm and 10pm so you would therefore only need to purchase a Pay & Display voucher if
you were in one of the dedicated motorhome bays and wanted to stay the night. Likewise its free from 6am until
8am.

If you are parked between 8am and 6.30pm then you would need to purchase a day ticket which costs £2.50.

Kind Regards

Grant Talac
The Parking Team
East Lothian Council

Which doesn't look too unreasonable..

Quite frankly I have no intention of using these facilities. This is the council who blame us for the weather. Who passed 22 TROs banning us from their coastal car parks earlier this year. Now they offer us 6 places in East Lothian for a limited period. Just read some of their comments about us with regards to anti social behaviour. They still go on about us using campsites that are closed half the year. The thought of giving this bunch of clowns £10 simply makes we want to vomit. Thankfully there are plenty of nicer friendlier places to visit in Scotland.

Well maybe not ready for humble pie just yet. Totally get what you’re saying Bill it’s hard to swallow but better than a complete ban. I like Yellowcraigs and would use it out of the busy times.

Can't you park at Yellowcraigs already ?

I would rather have my molars extracted with no anaesthetic than give EL a penny Cal.
I have nothing but utter contempt for them.
As far as they are concerned we are to blame for all of their issues in their car parks.
I am not saying that we are angels, I know we have idiots amongst us.

Take Musselburgh, after they banned us, and put up barriers I was informed they had to close their toilets due to vandalism soon after we were banned.
I remember listening to drunks on the beech shouting out obsenities till 1am, then leaving all of their mess on the beech when they left.
Urinating were they stood when the toilets were closed.
Taps left running, dog crap everywhere, I could go on.
But hey they took care of us in their usual manner.
And yet look over the other side of the Forth, and you see a council who have done all they can for us.
The contrast is stark.
There are places in East Lothian were we can wild camp, and we like the CCC site in Dunbar.
6 places in the whole of East Lothian they're having a laugh.

We were told last year by a warden so long as you paid parking fees you could within the section before the barriers.
So it looks like this "Offer" is a red herring with a £10 surcharge added.
You have to ask why a council that keeps on telling us to use campsites (even when they are closed for 6 months) is advocating parking in a car park right outside a CMC campsite.

They have pre-loaded the dice for failure
Max 6 places @ £10 a night will be a major weapon for the anti brigade

I understand the hatred you have for ELC. To use Musselburgh as an example isn’t fair. I was local to Mussie and would I park there overnight? Not if you paid me. For all the reasons you describe. It’s in a heavily populated area and a haunt for the young guns to hang around. I never had a problem using other EL car parks to overnight I just avoided places like Mussie and N Berwick. Hopefully trial goes well and more spaces are allocated. Councils aren’t stupid (stubborn and ignorant maybe but also money poor) and if they see what Fife are doing is making money and solving a problem they might want a bit of it.

Motorhomers were at fault at Musselburgh . Filling the car park , parking in turning space , tables and chairs out etc
Of course the other bad behaviour there was blamed on us too

Exactly, 6 places are bound to be over subscribed.
I can see the headlines, we tried to offer them placements, and they abused the facilities by over subscribing them, and this led to anti social behaviour.
They made their minds up about us long ago, you only have to read the many comments attributed to us by them over the years, and the efforts they have went to, to prevent us from using facilities we helped to pay for.

I hear you but knowing the area would you stay there? Like Portobello along the road. No way would I overnight at a place like that so close to a big city and as you say the people that do aren’t fussy and don’t care. As I keep saying us common sense campers are now the minority not the majority.

Sorry but they had far worse things to deal with than us, but we alone are dealt with Cal. I know they had issues with us, but in comparison to how others behaved we were the least of their problems. Things got so bad, we had decided never to return before they erected their barriers. You have to remember that many including ourselves lack your local knowledge, and saw no reason not to head for Musselburgh Fisherrow.

But let’s give your view some thought then Cal, let’s move away from heavily populated areas such as Musselburgh, let’s head to the shore carparks east of Dunbar, Whitesands, Barns Ness, and Skateraw Harbour carparks. These carparks are situated in almost completely uninhabited areas. They all have barriers, and signage. We used to park outside Whitesands until they marked the road with double yellow lines, and then filled in the lay bye with soil creating a metre high mound preventing us from parking there. They sent out wardens every day to hand out tickets to people who were behaving perfectly. I could give you plenty of other examples.
Not only do they put barriers up everywhere, they also go on record regularly spreading misinformation about us. They reckon we are the route of all of their issues, and regularly ask why we don’t “always” use campsites which are closed from October till April. :)
I don’t hate EL I simply have the same contempt for them, that they have shown for us.

I have stayed in both places . Twenty minutes trip for me . Wake up next to the sea . Used to be a nice spot at Prestonpans too .
