Dutch Ovens, Double Skillets, Chicken & Pizza

I don't have a oven in the van just 3 gas burners so been reading around on stove top equivalents to baking and very tempted to get me a Dutch Oven eg

I love cast iron pots and I suppose the heavier the more 'roasty' ???

There's a youtube cook who does a nicely browned roast chicken and most of the trimmings in a Dutch Oven - seeing is believing.

But what's all this about double skillets - I don't get it - can anyone spell it out for me?

Is it possible to bake a supermarket pizza given only gas burners?

Maths question - A man has a camper van with 2 leisure batteries and no solar panel - he is not hooked up - can he make his daughter a pizza in his poxy 1KW Baby Belling and keep the lights on for the rest of the night?

I’d get a pressure cooker instead save on cooking time save on gas the only thing is not to let the pressure get to high and don’t overfill otherwise a great pot to cook in.

Got one and use it all the time. Love butter beans me. Never occurred to me to use it for roast chicken tho.
 
I got one of those double skillet pans, was ok but hardly used it. Not in van anymore. I love me Dutch oven though, stove, open fire or bbq. I got a Petromax one, think they are all much the same though.

I cook a chicken in the pressure cooker but you cannot get crispy skin unless you blowtorch it when cooked kitchen blowtorch not an industrial one 😂😂

Very tempted to get that one I linked to in the OP. £70 is cheap for that level of quality - they are selling second hand ones on ebay for a lot more than that.
 
Beginning to suss it now - the double skillet thing is about being able to emulate heat above and below by rotating it...

Slow on the uptake....
 
Thank you but I don't do aluminium cookware on account of it gives you oldtimer's or so I believe.

Think you will find this was disproved a long time ago. The research was very suspect and was based on, I think, Indian pans with water being boiled for hours perhaps releasing a chemical. It was never replicated but is well remembered!
 
1 kw oven and LB

You would obviously need a suitable inverter (Say 1.5 KW) connected to the LBs with suitable (jump lead type) Short cables

1 KW would draw about 4.5 amps at 220V
Thus at 12V it would draw roughly 20x as much = 90 amps (when heating up)How long for maybe 30 mins as it is a low power oven
Most people who need that sort of power only do so whilst travelling so the alternator provides most of the power
90 amps x 30 mins = 45 amp-hours "half a battery"

Solar would not help much until the next morning when it is 2 late as 2x LB will be dead dead dead

The only thing we use our small (built in) GAS oven for is heating croissants or the like

The numbers are very helpful thanks. Gas as the fuel has to make sense. 1 Kw didn't sound like much but when you think it's a thousand or so LED's it's actually a lot.

Simplest options seem to be a 1Kw oven on EHU or a dutch oven for off grid.

Hmm, you can't really prove a negative, but I agree it may be overstated for heating baked beans - I think it becomes more problematic when it comes to coffee pots which get to higher temperatures and pressures.
 
I have cooked pizza in a thick frypan, got it brown and crisp on the bottom, cooked through with melted cheese but the top was just melted not really the same, especially extra toppings. Just have to watch it as too much heat burns base and not enough takes too long. Needed a lid to cover it. Think it would be ok in a skillet but can't myself as currently no van! Like the idea of browning it with a kitchen blowtorch!
 
Poor results in a Remoska ,plus size restrictions for a supermarket pizza

crisp the bottom in a dry frying pan, finish the top by putting under the grill. It works but in my opinion not as well as a dedicated oven
