I dont normally recommend Caravan club CL's - but this one is very close to me, and you dont really need to be a member to stay (rural Scotland!),
Stayed here over the weekend - its a 2 acre site, immaculately kept, adjoining a river (great pools for swimming), good walking nearby.
We were the only ones all weekend, and its only £5 a night.

Search the caravan club site - Penpont (12 miles N of Dumfries).
Wouldnt be right to put the phone No. here without permission...!

Stayed here again this weekend - again, we were the only ones on, but not surprising, as not many people visit Dumfries and Galloway!!

If you wanted to avoid the £5/ night, there is a great spot 200 yds further up the road which is often used (but may be private - so cant really go in the poi's).
I have seen 'proper' gypsies (with horse and van) here - and once saw it used by a woman touring Scotland on horseback, with just a bivouac.
