Downloading I player abroad

Hi Guys

Just to confirm I am currently in lanzarote and using the Surf Easy that was recommended, I have paid for it and it lets you install on 5 devices. Tried iplayer, tv catch up, skygo, and ITV player and all working perfectly, the beauty is its also installed on Laptop, Phone and tablet so We can use any of them and its working perfect! :D

Hang on a minute, what on earth are you good people using as an internet connection, and what on earth does all this cost??! We are currently in France and using 3 'Feel at Home' quite successfully even in some relatively remote locations, despite an initial problem when we discovered that 'roaming' had somehow got turned off and another issue or two with it which resulted in at least an hours 'phone call to customer services during our first days in France. Maybe some more on this saga at a later date. We have 15Gb a month with 3 and no landline at home in UK, nor do we subscribe to anything on TV there. As we are touring around looking to buy a permanent home in France somewhere or other an Internet connection is fairly important to us on this trip, but we will almost certainly use up our 15Gb this montly just looking at property, let alone watching BBC iplayer. I can only assume that you are using FON or sitting in McDo's an awful long time?!

I am currently at Santa Pola on the aire at the top of the hill. Not the best of locations but the WiFi connection is great and free. We usually spend a few days here when we want to catch up with washing and cleaning out the van.
I did start to explore some of the ideas offered but then Hotspot Shield Elite started working again properly so have stuck with it for now. So now have downloaded a few hours of TV via WIFI.

As regards the package I am using - I have 3 mobile contract which gives me unlimited data and texts, 200 minutes phone calls and 2000 minute to other 3 mobile users. All for £17 a month. If I need more I can buy add ons. I am not sure how long I can use the feel at home for - I think it's limited to so many weeks out of a years contract. We left UK on 12th September and I've used it in France and Soain since then. Luckily most of the people I call are on 3 also and I haven't come close to using allowance or data allowance.

I was told by 3 when enquiringly about data roaming, you can have "feel at home" for 50 days. Not sure what that means......in all? Yearly?

I posted this on another site a few days back - looks like the BBC is going to start blocking overseas access via known VPN hosts that provide UK-Based IP Addresses (Hotspot Shield, Surf Easy etc):

BBC shuts off iPlayer to UK VPNs, cutting access to overseas fans • The Register

It may, of course, just be scare mongering, but it'd be easy enough for the Beeb to block access from known ranges of IP Addresses used by various VPN Providers.

If you have a UK Property with a broadband connection, then the way to go will be to install your own router and make sure it supports VPN connectivity - ASUS make some, and just about anything that'll run DD-WRT will support a VPN as of the latest version.

I hardly watch any TV nowadays, but I'm UK-based and pay my TV license, so I do feel I ought to still be able to access the BBC when I'm abroad and tend to make a point of doing so, just because I can!

Hi Morph,

I'm in Portugal at the moment and in response to your post I turned on my VPN and connected to BBC without a problem.
