Which VPN do you use. I have Hotspot Shield but doesn't seem to be working and I don't want to spend anymore money on something that maybe won't let me use BBC iplayer

As you are probably aware, watching and downloading BBC content from outside of the UK is illegal. I don't know what your wifi setup is but a 1 hour programme will use about 600mb so if you are on a set data limit plan then you will soon use up your allowance.

I use Surf Easy. Have to pay for it, can't remember how much but it's not a lot and it's good for either two or three phones/tablets. Sorry to be vague about the details but it's never let me down when I want to watch BBC or ITV abroad, never had a problem. Had it a year or so now and signed up after a free trial. I read lots of reviews first and it came out tops.

Hi Kryten,

Whilst you are correct I would mention that I pay for my TV license although I spend 10 months or so of the year outside of the U.K. I suspect I'm committing what you might call a victimless crime eh?

For live TV FILMON TV FREE LIVE TV MOVIES AND SOCIAL TELEVISION works well but for i Player etc the only free one I have found recently that kind of works is Cyberghost5.

Surf anonymously - Download now and use for free | CyberGhost VPN

If you use the free version it does this annoying countdown thing while it pretends to wait for a free UK server but it does work.

What I tend to do is either use filmon for live or catchup using one of the Watch Series servers. WatchSeries: Free TV-Shows Updated Daily - Watch Series Online

Its reasonably up to date on stuff like the X Factor etc. :D

No VPN or anything like that needed for that site and pretty much every series ever on TV is on it. Just make sure you have ad blocker installed and AV.

I also use Cyberghost. The free version will kick you off after three hours though. Best to download what you want to watch first. :)

I use zenmate, it allows me to watch iplayer or any other catch up tv, I can put the lottery (online) on as well if I wanted to

Two years ago I found the following worked:

  • Initiate the download using Cyberghost
  • Pause the download
  • Disable the VPN connection
  • Resume the download

The download then completes at the full speed of the available connection rather than a slower, or much slower, VPN connection ...

So does Surfeasy trick the app into thinking you are in the UK then?

Sorry for delay in reply. The answer is yes. I set Surf Easy to GB and bob's your uncle. Obviously there are other VPNs and I'm not saying this is the best but it works for me.

Zenmate in Google Chrome is excellent. I use the free version in the UK for accessing sites like Watch series etc which are blocked by a lot of UK ISP's but ive not used it abroad for iPlayer etc as the free version does not give you a UK IP address so can I assume you are using the paid for version or am I missing something?

To be fair it is pretty good and if I was really bothered about watching UK stuff all the time abroad on catch up I would probably pay for Zenmate.

Thanks for all replies. Plenty to think about - all I need to do is get a good WiFi connection and then I'll have a try of some of them. I'll report back when I have had a go - probably not while end of the week

When I first started using it the free version gave you a UK IP address, I paid for the pro version earlier this year because I also thought it was worth it

The free version Of Hotspot Shield provides you with a USA IP number. [iPlayer does not permit downloads to the USA.]
The "Elite" (paid) version lets you connect to servers in 15+ countries (I have not hunted to find out which); if you are an Elite user and cannot use iPlayer, you might not be signed in to your Hotspot Shield Elite account and Hotspot Shield is in FREE mode.

(The above info and more readily available on the Hotspot Shield website.)

The Romania location was unknown to me, but I can't say that it bothers me.

The generation of SSL certificates looks a bit dodgy! Though I don't understand what the consequences might be ...

Was going to download cyber ghost app but it says not available in UK App Store.
Going to have another go at HS Elite.

This thread has prompted me to do something about a VPN and yesterday I downloaded F-Secure's Freedome, which offers a 14-day unrestricted free trial. It comes from what I regard as a reputable source and offers a wide range of countries, including those in which I'm interested. Easy installation and initial setup and it enabled us to watch an excellent French documentary programme last night. The annual subscriptions are probably more or less in the ballpark, but Hotspot Shield Elite is considerably more competitive and apparently will start when Windows is started, which Freedome appears not to, though I guess I can try adding it to the Startup folder.
I'm slightly put off HS Elite by the lack of response to a query as to which countries they offer: two very different statements on different pages of their website. I'm surprised at how difficult many of these companies make it to determine both the IP locations available and the cost of their subscriptions.
