don't drink the water

I have wandered the hills of Scotland for many long years and when in need of refreshment have drank from the nearest burn (stream for southerners). I have never suffered any ill effects. On out first wild camping trip last weekend to Sugar Bowl at Aviemore, I wandered down to burn, (stream again)filled water container and lived to type this reply!:)

and dont we all . i usewater from mountain streams springs etc. i do have a good filter in case we feel a bit tummy upset. i visit all over europe n north africa and into west africa ,always do find drinking water every where. Ido find it difficult that so many folk have trouble finding suitable water to drink. Imay have a 5ltr bottle of water handfor tahing on the m,bike if i think we are going somewhere out of the way.

There might still be a few places in this country you can do that, I would caution tho that if the water is run off from fields you might be drinking Sheep and cow p1ss / sh*%t. Not recommended if you are young, pregnant or elderly as they can both carry some real nastys. I used to do it myself but have stopped as my kids have a habit of copying me and I would be gutted if either of them went down with anything.

I am ex forces and even in the forces drinking from unknown sources was a last resort and if you had to then whenever possible you would boil or add purifiers.

The water tends to be run off from high hills/mountains with no sheep or cows about, maybe the odd deer but that's about it and they tend not to pee or s**t in running water as they ain't potty trained :)

As long as it's fast flowing you should be ok. As for will I live to post again............................here I am, sitting sipping a glass of finest French mineral water;)

Tank water can taste like TCP (that's as close as I can get) I have never found what causes it, the tank has been cleaned, swilled, and cleaned again. But every now and then the water tastes like TCP and is no good for tea making.
So I use bottled water for tea and drinking and the tank for everything else.

Hi hope your enjoying France,
Its not that sheep and cows actually go in the rivers its that it gets washed off of the fields by rain.

For me its all about risks and determing what is an acceptable risk, we each have a different level at which we operate. But people need to have the facts so that they can make an informed decision. One thing people should know is that water even if it looks clean and comes from what is perceived to be a clean place such as a mountain stream may not be as clean as it seems. I once saw people in Wales filling bottles from what they thought was a natural spring, in fact it was just run off from the fields above them all of which were full of sheep. Not my idea of clean water....

Now I'm off to drink some of me home brew, if that don't make me sick nothing will :D

I totally agree.

Has you are well aware if you are ex forces water is far more important than food, and has you suggest purification tablets or at worst boiling is recommended.

Perhaps a slightly different situation with wild camping, but the dehydration sickness causes is the main reason for being ultra careful with water in a field situation.

Still each to their own.

Hi Hallii,

I think I can solve your problem with the taste of the water. :D

I noticed that you live in Worcester.

My advice is to lock your tank filling point. That will stop AJ peeing in your fresh water tank.:eek:

AJ. have you tried putting a jug ofit in the fridge .sometimes the chlorine goes away if put in a fridge. sort of evaporation .

On the subject of water,
How do you like yours, soft or hard ? ( water please people ).:D
When ever we travel out we always take our tap water from home in bottles as we live in a hard water area and we are avid tea bellies. we fill the tank with any type of water because that is used for everything else.
Soft water tea is blah:D:D:D

have,nt tried it my self, but i did drive for s,west water and there operators always said to me it evaporates if put in a fridge. just one of those things you pickup and it sticks in your mind. if it persists you may be able to get big bottles of water brought to you .I know s,west do but you must keep on to them. tell them its giving you trouble in your mouth. ha ha cheers alan.

Hi vwalan,

Every night I dream of AJ having trouble with his mouth. Life would be more peaceful on this forum.

If the NHS was better he would be put somewhere more appropriate.

Maybe I should start a thread for suggestions. :D

I always boil the water out of our tank. Then I put a spoonful of coffee in it to take away the taste of water!

Why would you want to drink water when there's all that wine in the world?
