don't drink the water

We have been used to a 25 litre water bottle and that had to supply us for tea and washing up. This did us fine in our Leisuredrive campervan conversion.

We've just upgraded to a Hymer Exsis and have about 100 litres of water storage capacity. At first we went to considerable trouble to find potable water and only after a few days did we realise that 95% of our water needs fall outside the potable category.

Now we fill up with anything wet for the shower, toilet, washing up etc and use Lidl at 17p per time for the water to go in the kettle.

Welcome to thise site,
You'll find potable water taps in graveyards, public loo's, petrolstations, marina's, harbours, fire stations, swimming pools..... Only ask ;)

Good policy. When I don't drink beer, I get Tescos sparkling water value brand. I think it is 17p or 19p for a 2 litre bottle.

The hardened pros have decent filters and can fill up with anything and still put it in the kettle though!

We must be hardened pros. We have always used the water in the tank of our Hymer for all purposes. UK and continental with no problems whatsoever.

If I wanted water just for drinking I could boil it and let it cool.

Probably cheaper to buy than to boil at todays prices.:)

When you boil a kettle put the rest to one side to cool for drinking. Put it in the fridge for a cold drink. I would rather do that than buy plastic bottles to fill the next recycling bin with. It has also been said that Antimony leaches out of the plastic bottle into the water.

The thing I like is;
Filtered through the mountains for 6 million years, use by 3/12/2009!

water?

I never drank water after I realised that fish deflacate, urinate and fornicate in it!!:D:D

I find scottish water to be the best. They have a method of treating and sometimes blending it!!!!

Water Filter

There is a tip in the new C & CC monthly mag.

If you are not sure about the water quality, add Milton to the water tank in the ratio recommended to Hospitals (by Milton but it does not give the details).

Fit a Whale Aqua Source (in line) Filter to take out the taste.

Apparently an in line filter is much better

ie: acylindrical one where the inlet is at one end and outlet at the other end.

I always used to add a drop of Milton to the water tank in my van, you have to be careful though as Milton can attack the stainless steel in your water heater apparently, I have used it for years both in Vans and caravans and not had any problems though, I now use water purification tablets that I buy from ASDA, their own brand very cheap too.We don't actually drink the water from the tank ,we buy bottled water to drink neat as it were, but do clean teeth with tank water.I never empty my water tank as our van is used all year, but a little chemical now and again keeps it and the water pipes sweet.

The best way to clean water is to put silver in your water container. thats why cowboys had silver dollars in their drinking bottles. today the water boards use a kind of aluminium . best get a proper water filter . i use a doulton ceramic with silver in lay . get them from brown church landrover shop in london. as used by the world health authority,s just about drink any water now.
prefer wine or beer .

Milton contains anti-bacterial substances.

Works out cheaper than silver dollars these days. :D

I use my van as an office all week and we are out 2-3 times a month so the water is constantly used. I've never had a problem with it, Likewise I have never thought about cleaning the pipes in my house or adding milton :)

If it was standing for any length of time full, but particularly if empty then I would steralise it before using it again.

In France we have always used the water even with small children, I once heard that the bottles that water is sold in are in fact 100 times the value of the water thats in them.

I also heard that In France 10% of their land fill is plastic water bottles !!!!! What a legacy, in the future they will debate this in Universitys and try to figure out why we had clean piped water but still purchased water in bottles that caused so much pollution to make and then dispose of.

Just my point of view, sound like a hippy but I aint and the fact my van does 26 miles to a gallon dos not sit well with it either :D

Hi,
While on an extended trip through China a few years ago I discovered that one of our party was a microbiologist, in fact the former president of that eminent society. So naturally I started talking about motor home internal water tanks – like you do! The upshot was that
A] Providing it is a black tank that allows no light through &
B] You also have an in line filter between the tank & the tap, and then most tap water supplied throughout Europe should be OK drink. Boil if you are reeelly reelly cautious.
I flush the tank & pipes through once a year using diluted milton. From personal experience we have never suffered any stomach upsets in over 20 years of motor homing & using tap water throughout the Continent, Beer yes, water no.
